NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The 17th ranked Providence College field hockey team earned its first victory of the season with a 2-1 victory against Yale on Saturday, September 1 in New Haven, Conn. Senior Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) scored what proved to be the game winning goal in the 61st minute off a feed from sophomore Kerianne Murphy (Walpole, Mass.).
Providence took a 1-0 lead in the first half as freshman Ashlyn Hudson (Stoughton, Mass.) registered her first collegiate goal. Hudson's goal came on a penalty corner as she tipped in an initial shot from senior Michalagh Stoddard (Norwood, Mass.). Stoddard was credited with the assist.
In the second half, Yale tied the score, 1-1, as Cat Lindroth connected on her first goal of the season off a feed from Lorie Kiger in the 56th minute.
Providence held a decisive edge in shots (25-7), shots on goal (11-4) and penalty corners (11-3) in the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) recorded three saves to preserve the win for the Friars in goal. All three of her saves came in the first half. Charlotte Goins registered nine saves on the day for Yale. Goins also stopped a penalty stroke midway through the second half to keep the score knotted at a 1-1 tie.
The Friars host Holy Cross on Wednesday, September 5 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. The contest marks the 2007 home opener for Providence. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. PC's match-up with Holy Cross marks the first of five-consecutive home games for the Friars.
