PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior forward Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, October 27. Poulin earns the honor for the first time this season and second time in her field hockey career at Providence College.

Poulin scored five goals in two victories last week against Brown (6-2) on October 22 and BIG EAST foe Georgetown (6-2) on October 26. Her five goals came on just seven shot attempts. She started the week with two goals against the Friars' cross-city rival Brown and followed with her first career hat trick against Georgetown. Poulin's five goals and 10 points on the week move her into ninth place all-time at Providence in career goals (34) and also in career points (78). Additionally, her 10 points on the week helped her to eclipse the 30-point plateau in a single-season for the first time in her collegiate career. In 19 games, she has recorded 31 points on 15 goals and one assist. Poulin has scored 20-or-more points in each of her three seasons with the program. In 2008, Poulin has scored at least one goal in five of the Friars' six BIG EAST Conference regular-season games.

Senior midfield/defender Jessica Lane (South Windsor, Conn.) was selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Lane recorded two goals and two assists in Providence's two victories last week, proving she has returned to top-form since missing six games with an injury. With her two assists on the week, Lane moves into seventh place all-time at Providence in career assists. For the season, Lane owns 10 points on two goals and six assists.

The Friars recently clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Conference Field Hockey Tournament for the third-consecutive season. It marks the first time Providence has qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament in three-straight seasons since doing so during the 1996 through 1998 seasons. Additionally, the Friars have secured double-digit victories in each of the last three seasons. It marks the longest string of consecutive seasons with double-digit wins since the Friars reeled out a stretch of six-straight seasons of double-digit victories from 1987 to 1992.

Providence will conclude its regular-season schedule against No. 17 Massachusetts on Saturday, November 1 at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, the program will honor its four-member senior class in a brief ceremony. The Friars will begin BIG EAST Tournament play on Saturday, November 8 as the No. 4 seed. With one week remaining in the league's regular-season schedule, the Friars will await the final BIG EAST standings before their opponent in the tournament semifinals is determined. The BIG EAST Tournament will be played at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Conn. Additional information regarding the BIG EAST Tournament will be released as information becomes available. The winner of the 2008 BIG EAST Championship will earn the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Field Hockey Championship.
