Three Field Hockey Players Earn All-BIG EAST Honors

HARTFORD, Conn. - Three members of the Providence College field hockey program have earned All-BIG EAST honors. The selections were announced at the league's annual championship banquet, held at the Hilton Hartford Hotel in Hartford, Conn. on November 7. Junior forward Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) was selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team for the second-straight season. Senior midfielder/defender Jessica Lane (South Windsor, Conn.) and junior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) each earned Second-Team recognition.

Poulin, a unanimous selection to the First Team, enters the BIG EAST Tournament with a team-best 33 points on 16 goals and one assist. Her 16 goals on the year are the most scored by a Friar in a single-season since 1989, when Karen Krawchuk netted 24 goals. Additionally, five of her 16 goals have been game winners. In BIG EAST regular-season play, Poulin finished tied for third in the conference in goals, with eight tallies. Her eight goals came on just 15 shot attempts (2.5 shots per game). She managed to score at least one goal in five of six BIG EAST Conference regular-season games. She notched five multiple-goal games on the season, including her first career hat trick (three goals) against Georgetown on October 26. Poulin currently ranks ninth all-time in scoring at Providence with 80 points on 35 goals and 10 assists. Her 35 career goals also sits among the top-10 at Providence all-time in a three-way tie for seventh place.

Lane, despite missing six games with an injury, earned All-BIG EAST Second-Team honors for the second-straight season. In the 14 games she has played, she has recorded 10 points on two goals and six assists. Since returning from injury on October 18 vs. Louisville, she has seen action in five games and has scored six points on two goals and two assists. Lane ranks 29th on Providence's all-time scoring list with 41 career points on seven goals and 27 assists. Her 27 assists rank seventh all-time among Friar leaders. A year ago, Lane distributed a single-season career high of 18 assists, which was one shy of the program's single-season record of 19. That mark was set by Friar great Paula Wagoner in 1997.

Chamberlain, who earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and First-Team honors in each of the previous two seasons, was named to the Second-Team in 2008. Chamberlain started each of the Friars 20 games this season and posted a 12-8 record, including five shut-out victories. Her five shut-out wins brings her career total to 17. In 1,436 minutes of action in the cage, Chamberlain allowed 32 goals and recorded 100 saves for a 0.758 save percentage and a 1.56 goals against average. In her three-year career at Providence, Chamberlain has played 62 games (4,296 minutes) and owns a 42-20 (.677) overall record. She also has an impressive career save percentage of .783 and a goals against average of 1.35. In 2006, Chamberlain was selected as an NFHCA Division I Third-Team All-American.

The Friars enter the 2008 BIG EAST Championship with a 12-8 overall record and are the No. 4 seed. Providence will take on top-seeded Syracuse on Saturday, November 8 at 11:00 a.m. in Storrs, Conn. in the first semifinal. No. 2 Louisville and No. 3 Connecticut will square off in the second semifinal of the day at 1:30 p.m. The winner of each semifinal will advance to the BIG EAST Championship Game at 1:00 p.m. on November 9. The BIG EAST Champions will earn the league's automatic berth to the 2008 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship. Providence has advanced to the BIG EAST Championship game during each of the previous two seasons.
