PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team swept a double header against Marist College Sunday afternoon at Raymond Field. The Friars posted a 1-0 victory in the first game and rallied for a 6-5 win in the second game. PC improved to 15-11-1 overall, while the Red Foxes fell to 10-16.
Sophomore Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) improved to 7-4 on the season as she tossed her fourth consecutive shutout to lead the Friars to a 1-0 triumph in the first game. Bertolette, who has not yielded a run since March 22 against Maine, allowed just two hits and struck out five batters as she lowered her earned run average to 1.82. Marist pitcher Megan Rigos allowed one run on three hits and struck out seven batters in six innings of action.
The Friars scored the lone run of the game in the sixth inning when sophomore Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) hit a sacrifice fly to score classmate Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.), who led off the inning with a base hit.
In the second game, the Friars rallied from a 5-3 seventh inning decifit to post a 6-5 win in eight innings. Freshman Justine Stratton hit two home runs, including a walk-off blast in the eighth inning to lift the Friars. Stratton gave the Friars a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when she connected on a two-run home run marking the first home run of her career. The Red Foxes scored three times in the sixth inning to gain a 3-2 edge. Annie Castellano hit a two-run home run to even the score, while McCallion Campbell added a solo shot to give her team a one-run edge.
The Friars rebounded in the bottom half of the sixth inning to tie the game (3-3) when sophomore Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) hit a double down the left field line to score senior Samantha Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) who led off with an infield hit. Marist regained the lead (5-3) in the top of the seventh when Pamela de la Llave doubled to drive in one run and she later came around to score on an error. In the bottom half of the inning, the Friars rallied again to even the score at 5-5. With two outs and one runner on first base, Becker belted a home run to center field and sent the game into extra innings. Freshman pitcher Kathryn Sullivan (Lagrangeville, N.Y.), who came in relief of junior Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) in the sixth inning, held the Red Foxes scoreless in the eighth inning. With one out in the bottom half of the eighth inning, Stratton hammered a home run to left field to seal the win for the Friars. Sullivan picked up her first career win as she pithed two-plus innings, allowed one earned run and struck out two batters.
The Friars are back in action on Tuesday, April 1 when they play a single game at Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H.
