BOSTON, Mass. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Northeastern, 2-1, in a key regional match-up on September 4 in Boston, Mass. The Friars improve to 2-1 overall on the season, while Northeastern drops to 1-1. Sophomores Ashlyn Hudson (Stoughton, Mass.) and Jaime Lipski (Dallas, Pa.) each tallied one goal in the victory.
After a scoreless first half for both teams, Hudson gave the Friars a 1-0 lead as she recorded her first goal of the season off a rebound from an initial Providence attempt at the cage. Hudson's goal came at the 39:09 mark. Just minutes later, at 41:55, Lipski connected on her first goal of the year off a Hudson assist.
Friar goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) narrowly missed a bid at her first shut-out victory of the 2008 campaign. She held the Huskies scoreless until the 66th minute, before Carolyn Malloy ripped a shot into the upper left hand corner of the cage on a reverse stick. The play was assisted by Ashley Bascetta. Chamberlain posted the victory in goal with five saves. Colleen Duffy recorded six saves for Northeastern.
Providence (2-1) returns to action on Sunday, September 7 against non-conference opponent Yale. It marks the 2008 home opener for the Friars, and is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.
