2010 Schedule

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College men's lacrosse program released the schedule for its inaugural season in the BIG EAST Conference on Tuesday, November 17. After competing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) from 1996-2009, the Friars will begin a new era in the program's history in 2010 in the newly- formed league. PC will play five home games and nine away contests. The BIG EAST regular-season consists of six league games. Six of the Friars matches will be against schools that qualified for the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

Providence will prepare for BIG EAST play with a challenging slate of non-conference games. Highlights include road contests against Massachusetts on March 16 at 3:00 p.m. and cross-town rival Brown on April 20 at 7:00 p.m. The Minutemen entered the 2009 NCAA Tournament as the No. 13 seed and fell to No. 4 Princeton in the opening round, 10-7. The Bears were the No. 9-seeded team in the tournament and fell to Johns Hopkins, 12-11, in the NCAA First Round last season in Baltimore. The Friars will also play former MAAC rival Siena on March 27 at 1:00 p.m. in Loudonville, N.Y. The Saints won the MAAC title in 2009 and made the NCAA Tournament as the No. 15 seed, losing to No. 2 Syracuse, 11-4.

The BIG EAST slate will feature a road contest against the two-time defending national champion Syracuse Orange on April 24 and the Friars first-ever BIG EAST home matchup against Georgetown on March 21 at Noon. The Orange won its record 11th national championship in 2009 with a 10-9 overtime victory against Cornell in the NCAA Championship Game. The Hoyas have made 11 NCAA appearances in school history and finished with a 7-7 record last season.

The Friars open the 2010 season with four road games. The team makes its season debut on February 27 in Clinton, S.C. with a Noon contest at Presbyterian. From there, Providence will head south to Florida for a 7:00 p.m. game on Friday, March 5 against Jacksonville University. PC then returns to New England for a 1:00 p.m. matchup at Quinnipiac on March 13 and the contest against the Minutemen on March 16.

Providence makes its home debut on March 21 at Noon against Georgetown. The contest will be the Friars first-ever BIG EAST game. After the matchup with the Hoyas, the Friars will play at Siena before returning home for an April 3 meeting with intra-state foe Bryant at 2:00 p.m. The game will be the first between the Friars and Bulldogs since the 1983 season.

On April 10, the Friars play their first-ever road BIG EAST contest against St. John's at 1:00 p.m. in Queens. Providence has not played the Red Storm since the 1995 season. From there, PC heads back to the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex for a home game with Ivy League foe Yale on April 13 at 7:00 p.m. The Friars played one of their most exciting matches of the season against the Bulldogs last year, falling in overtime, 11-10, on March 5, 2009 in New Haven, Conn.

After Yale, the Friars will travel to South Bend, Ind. for their first ever matchup with BIG EAST opponent Notre Dame on April 17 at Noon. The Fighting Irish qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season as the No. 7 seed and were upset by 10th-seeded Maryland, 7-3, in the first round.

The Friars play at Brown on April 20 before heading to Syracuse for the April 24 matchup with the Orange.

Providence closes out the season with two BIG EAST matchups at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. On May 1, the Friars will host Villanova at 2:00 p.m. on Alumni Weekend. The Wildcats won the CAA last season and qualified for their first-ever NCAA Tournament, falling to top-seeded Virginia, 18-6. PC wraps up the 2010 campaign with a May 9 game versus Rutgers on Senior Day at 1:00 p.m. The Scarlet Knights finished the 2009 season with a 4-11 record.
