Cancelled Event: Softball versus Tarleton State

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by the University of Rhode Island, 7-6, on Thursday, April 16 at Raymond Field in Providence, R.I.
The Friars took a 3-0 first inning lead on a sacrifice fly by senior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) and a two-run double by sophomore Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.). However, the Rams scored three runs in the second inning to tie the game at 3-3. Stefani Poedubicky drove in two runs with a single, while Jackie Kampmeier drove in the third run of the inning with a double. URI took a 5-3 lead in the third inning and added one more run in the fourth to increase the lead to 6-3.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Providence scored twice to cut the lead to 6-5 as Sheehy hit a two-run single. PC tied the game at 6-6 in the fifth inning on an RBI single by junior Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.). However, in the seventh inning the Rams took the lead for good as Kampmeier was able to beat out an infield single to drive in what proved to be the game-winning run.
Alison Hartzell earned the win for the Rams as she pitched three-plus innings, allowed one earned run and struck out two batters. The Friars out-hit the Rams, 12-8, as Sheehy, freshman Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) and junior Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) each had two hits.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, April 18 at 11:00 a.m. with a BIG EAST double header against Syracuse.
