Softball To Host Syracuse and Pittsburgh This Weekend

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team will play two home BIG EAST Conference double headers this weekend at Raymond Field. PC will host Syracuse on Saturday, April 18 beginning at 11:00 a.m. and Pittsburgh on Sunday, April 19 beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Providence (13-26, 5-6 BIG EAST), which currently holds the eighth spot the BIG EAST standings, is coming off a 7-6 loss against the University of Rhode Island on Thursday, April 16. Senior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) led the Friars with two hits and three RBIs. The Friars have not played a conference game since Monday, April 13 when they split a double header against Seton Hall. Junior Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) hit three home runs (two in game two), including a two-run, walk-off blast as the Friars posted a 7-5 win in the second game. Sheehy leads the team in numerous offensive categories, including batting average (.388), hits (45), triples, RBIs (28) and slugging percentage (.627). Senior pitcher Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) leads the Friars with five wins and 64 strikeouts in 116 innings of action, while classmate Alisha Levin (Madisonville, Ky.) has a team best 2.96 earned run average in 28.1 innings.

Syracuse (23-13, 8-4 BIG EAST), which is in fourth-place in the BIG EAST standings, has won five consecutive games, including a double header sweep against Cornell on Wednesday, April 15. Jenna Caira pitched her team-leading fifth shutout of the season to lead the Orange to a 3-0 victory in game one. In game two, Brittany Gardner pitched five scoreless innings to help Syracuse post an 8-0 triumph. Stephanie Watts leads the team with a .380 batting average, 47 hits and seven home runs. Caira leads the Orange with an 11-5 record and 125 strikeouts. Last season, the Orange swept (6-0, 3-0) the Friars in a double header in Syracuse, N.Y. on April 4-5.

Pittsburgh (18-21, 4-12 BIG EAST), which has won three of its last four games, will play Seton Hall on Saturday, April 18 in South Orange, N.J. before playing Providence on Sunday, April 19. Most recently, the Panthers swept (9-0, 5-0) a home double header against Buffalo on Tuesday, April 14. Sam Card totalled three hits and three RBIs in the two games. Cory Berliner pitched six shutout innings and recorded five strikeouts in game one, while Kayla Zinger also recorded a shutout (seven innings) and posted five strikeouts. Last season, Pittsburgh posted two wins (3-0, 1-0) over the Friars on April 6 in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Following this weekend, the Friars will play a single game at Harvard on Tuesday, April 21 in Cambridge, Mass.
