Providence Game Notes Vs. Notre Dame in PDF Format
FRIARS CLOSE OUT HOME SCHEDULE VERSUS NOTRE DAME... The Friars will close out their home schedule on Thursday, April 30 with a home BIG EAST doubleheader against Notre Dame beginning at 12:30 p.m. It will mark the final home game for seniors Alisha Levin, Jennifer Maccio, Gina Rossi and Mary Rose Sheehy.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS NOTRE DAME... Providence is 2-26 all-time against Notre Dame with both wins coming in the last two years. The Friars recorded their first win against the Fighting Irish on April 14, 2007, a 9-0 victory in Providence. Last season, PC posted its first win at UND as it prevailed, 5-3, on April 26, 2008.
SCOUTING NOTRE DAME... The Fighting Irish (34-14, 15-3 BIG EAST) come into Thursday's games after posting their 13th win in the last 14 games, including a home doubleheader sweep (4-0, 6-3) against Syracuse on Sunday, April 26. Brittney Bargar led the Irish as she earned both wins. She allowed one run in nine innings of action combined in the two games. Christine Lux combined for three hits, three RBIs and two runs, while Linda Kohan had three hits, two RBIs and two runs for the Irish who recorded their eighth consecutive BIG EAST win.
FRIARS AT HOME... Providence has posted a 9-6 record at Raymond Field this season, including a 4-5 mark in BIG EAST Conference home contests. Last season, the Friars posted an 11-4 record at home and a 4-4 mark in league games.
PC LOOKING FOR PLAYOFF BERTH... The Friars, who have reached the BIG EAST Championship in two of the last three seasons, are seeking their third trip in four seasons. The Friars are 8-11 in the Conference, which is ninth for most league wins. The top eight teams qualify for the BIG EAST Championship, which will take place on May 7-9 in Louisville, Ky.
BERTOLETTE THROWS NO-HITTER... Junior Danielle Bertollete (Temecula, Calif.) threw her first career no-hitter to lead the Friars to a 10-0 victory in game two of a doubleheader sweep at St. John's on Sunday, April 26. It marked the third ever no-hitter in Providence College history and the first since March 16, 2002 when Nicole Bartholomew accomplished the feat. The other PC no-hitter was thrown on May 7, 1994 by Amy Kvilhaug, who is the head coach at St. John's. Bertolette allowed just four base runners as she collected her sixth win of the season and her second shutout. In addition, she struck out two batters.
FRIARS SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER AT ST. JOHN'S... Providence swept a BIG EAST doubleheader at St. John's on Sunday, April 26. The Friars posted a 3-1 victory in game one as senior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with a two-run double. Freshman Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) threw a complete game and allowed just one run on four hits and struck out two batters to earn her fifth win of the season. Pitching also was the story in the second game as Danielle Bertolette tossed her first career no-hitter to lead the Friars to a 10-0 victory. PC jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead in game two when junior Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) drove in the two runs with a double. PC scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 6-0 lead. In the fifth inning, junior Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) hit a two-run double to give the Friars a 4-0 edge. The next inning, senior Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) and freshman Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) each hit RBI doubles to drive in one run and help the Friars to a six-run advantage. In the seventh inning, freshman Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) hit an RBI single to score PC's seventh run. Junior Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) then smacked a three-run home run as the lead grew to 10-0. It marked Bertels' first home run of the season. Huber finished with three hits, while Becker, Abrams, Bertels and Sheehy each had two hits to lead the Friars' 14-hit attack.
SHEEHY LEADING THE WAY FOR THE FRIARS... Senior centerfielder Mary Rose Sheehy leads the Friars in numerous offensive categories this season. She is first on the team in batting average (.382), at bats (144), hits (55), doubles (11), triples (3), RBIs (34), slugging percentage (.625), total bases (90) and on-base percentage (.427). All of these categories are career highs for Sheehy, who was named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team in 2007.
SHEEHY MOVING UP THE CHARTS... Mary Rose Sheehy continues to move up the Providence record charts in numerous categories. She is second all-time with 74 career walks, fourth with 106 RBIs and is tied for fifth with 18 home runs. In addition, she boasts a .346 career average which would be a PC record. The current PC career batting average record is .338 held by Rachel Bartholomew (2004-07).
FRIARS AMONG BIG EAST LEADERS... In 19 BIG EAST games, the Friars lead the league with 30 doubles. In addition, Providence ranks in the top five in batting average (.285), slugging percentage (.452), triples (3) and on-base percentage (354).
RUNNING THE BASES... Freshman Michelle Huber and junior Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) lead Providence with nine and 12 stolen bases, respectively. Overall, the Friars have 28 stolen bases in 33 attempts. Last season, Providence recorded 31 steals in 37 tries as Revens collected a school record 26 stolen bases. Revens holds the PC record for most career steals with 44.
PROVIDENCE IN CLOSE GAMES... The Friars have recorded a 5-7 record this season in one-run contests, including a 2-2 mark in BIG EAST Conference contests. In addition, Providence is 0-4 in extra inning games.
FRIAR ALUMNAE AMONG THE COACHING RANKS... Four former Providence College softball players serve as head coaches at NCAA Division I schools. Kerri Jacklets `01, who played at Providence, currently is in her fourth season as the head coach at her alma mater. Amy Kvilhaug `96, one of PC's all-time greatest pitchers, serves as the head coach at St. John's University. Jen Finley `92 is the head coach at Boston College. In addition, twin sisters Kate Drohan `95 and Caryl Drohan `95 serve as the head coach and the associate head coach, respectively, at 11th-ranked Northwestern.
FRIAR QUICK HITS... The 14 hits against St. John's in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday tied a season mark for the Friars. PC also had 14 hits against Georgetown on April 3 and No. 21 Fresno State on March 7. • In the 10-0 win over St. John's on Sunday, the Friars also hit a season-high six doubles. • The 10 runs against St. John's marked the third highest run total this season. PC scored 13 runs at No. 21 Fresno State on March 7 and 11 runs against Rutgers on March 28. • The Friars, who have 10 triples this season, are four triples shy of tying the school record of 14 which was set in 1992. • Providence has posted a 1-7 record against ranked opponents this season, including a 13-5 win over then No. 21 Fresno State. • Freshman Jen Abrams is in the midst of a career-high six-game hit streak (April 9 - April 26) during which she has batted 9-for-16 (.562) with two doubles and two walks. • Mary Rose Sheehy has the best hitting streak this season when she hit safely in 13 consecutive games (March 7 - March 28) and batted 23-for-40 for a .575 batting average. • Sheehy was named to the BIG EAST Weekly honor roll on April 27 after hitting 6-for-12 (.500) in four games last week. • PC's two victories on Sunday over St. John's marked their first BIG EAST road doubleheader sweep since April 19, 2008 at Rugters.
HEAD COACH Kerri Jacklets... Kerri Jacklets is in her fourth season as head coach at PC. In three seasons, Jacklets has led Providence to two berths in the BIG EAST Tournament, including the 2008 campaign as the team finished with a 25-25-2 overall record. The Friars also earned impressive victories over No. 18 Georgia on February 17 and Notre Dame on April 26. The win over Notre Dame was the team's first ever in Notre Dame, Ind. In 2007, the Friars finished with an overall record of 23-24 including a 6-14 finish in the BIG EAST. The Friars earned their first ever victory over Notre Dame on April 14, defeating the Irish, 9-0. In 2006, Jacklets led the Friars to a 29-19-1 record, including an 11-11 mark in the BIG EAST. The 11 league wins were the most by a Friar team since 1995. Jacklets' team, which was picked to finish 11th out of 12 teams in the 2006 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches Poll, finished sixth in the Conference and earned the program's first trip to the BIG EAST Tournament since 1996. Jacklets was named head coach of the Providence College softball program on January 20, 2006. In 2005, Jacklets served as an assistant coach at Providence and helped the Friars to a 33-20 overall record. Prior to her assistant coaching position at Providence, Jacklets served three seasons (2001-04) as an assistant at Brown University. Jacklets enjoyed a stellar career as a catcher at PC from 1998-2001. She ranks third all-time at the College in batting average (.315), fifth all-time in home runs (18) and sixth in hits (179). Jacklets also ranks in the top-10 all-time in walks (41) and runs batted in (76). In 2001, she was named to the All-Northeast Region First Team. Jacklets was a four-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star and graduated from PC with a 3.33 GPA in Social Science.
