Softball Splits Double Header At Villanova, 3-6, 4-3

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference double header at Villanova Thursday afternoon in Villanova, Pa. Villanova posted a 6-3 win in the first game, but Providence responded with a 4-3 victory in the second game.

In game one, the Wildcats scored three times in the bottom of the third inning to post a 6-3 victory. The Friars took a 3-1 lead in the third inning after two outs were recorded. Junior Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) doubled, while classmate Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) hit a single. Sophomore Justine Stratton (Bakersfield, Calif.) then hit a three-run home run to give the Friars the lead. It marked her second home run of the season. However, the Wildcats regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. Meghan Morese led off with a home run, while Jackie Dempsey recorded an RBI single to even the score, 3-3. Danielle Maricle then walked with the bases loaded to give her team a 4-3 lead. Villanova added a single run in the fifth and sixth innings to seal the win.

In game two, the Friars took a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning and held on for a 4-3 victory. In the four-run sixth inning, freshman Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) hit an RBI single to open the scoring, while junior Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) drove in two runs with a double. Freshman Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) capped off the inning with an RBI single. The Wildcats rallied in the seventh inning as they scored three runs, but could not record the game-tying run. Shannon O'Brien and Natalie Hord each had RBI triples in the inning.

Freshman Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) earned the win (3-3) as she pitched a complete game and allowed three runs on six hits and struck out two batters. Revens and Huber each finished with two hits to lead the Friars.

The Friars are back in action on Saturday, April 11 when they host Seton Hall in a BIG EAST Conference double header at Raymond Field in Providence, R.I.
