Two Providence Softball Players Earn All-BIG EAST Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - It was announced today at the BIG EAST Softball Awards Banquet in Louisville, Ky., that Providence senior outfielder Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, while junior infielder Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) was named to the Second Team.

Sheehy becomes the first Providence player to earn first team honors since 2007 when Rachel Bartholomew earned the accolade. Sheehy, who was named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team in 2007, led the team with a .366 batting average in 23 conference games. In addition, she had five doubles, two triples, four home runs, 18 RBIs, a .444 on-base percentage and a .662 slugging percentage all of which ranked in the top-10 in the BIG EAST.

Sheehy finished her career at Providence as the school's all-time leader with a .348 average. She also finished fourth with 107 RBIs, third with a .528 slugging percentage and tied for fifth with 18 home runs. Last season, she set a PC single season record with 34 walks and has 75 overall, which is second all-time.

For Garcia, it marks her first BIG EAST accolade. She also becomes the first Friar shortstop to earn an All-BIG EAST honor since Beth Miller in 1996. In 23 conference games, Garcia had a .333 batting average and finished tied for second with 23 hits. Garcia led the BIG EAST Conference with eight doubles.
