PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College Field Hockey Team defeated Vermont, 2-1, on Monday, October 11, at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.
The two teams went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0. Providence held a 6-1 advantage in shots in the opening 35 minutes, including a 3-0 edge in shots on goal. The Friars also recorded three penalty corners, while holding the Catamounts without a penalty corner opportunity.
Eight minutes into the second half, Christie Lonsky (Dingmans Ferry, Pa.) scored her first goal of the season on a direct shot from the middle of the circle. Brittany Ross (Scarborough, Maine) recorded the assist. Vermont responded quickly when Taylor Silvestro scored an unassisted goal to tie the match at 1-1. At the 58:16 mark, freshman Hillary Anderson (Barrington, R.I.) scored her first career goal. On the goal, fellow freshman Jillian Walsh (Norwood, Mass.) registered her first career assist.
Providence outshot Vermont, 17-2 and held the advantage in penalty corners, 5-1.
The Friars return to action on Saturday, October 16 against BIG EAST foe Rutgers at 11:00 a.m. The game will be played at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.
