HAMDEN, CONN. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Quinnipiac University by the score of 12-2 on Saturday, March 13 in Hamden, Conn. Junior midfielder Evan Helda (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshman midfielder Kyle Dexter (Victoria, British Columbia) each recorded a goal for Providence to lead the team's offense. The Friars drop to 0-3 on the season while Quinnipiac improves to 3-1.
The Bobcats scored the first two goals of the game, before Helda posted his goal for the Friars off an assist from sophomore attackman Evan Olsen (Tampa, Fla.) with 10:31 to play in the second quarter. With Quinnipiac holding the 2-1 advantage, the Bobcats scored the final three goals of the half to take a 5-1 lead into intermission.
A score by Quinnipiac's Christian Haggerty less than a minute into the third quarter extended the Bobcats' lead to five at 6-1. With 12:01 to play in the third, Dexter registered his first-career goal off a good feed from senior attackman Colin Tigh (Garden City, N.Y.) to pull the Friars within four at 6-2. PC could not get any closer than four for the rest of the contest.
Freshman Tim Finnegan (Lowell, Mass.) took the loss in net for the Friars, allowing a goal and making a save in the first 7:40 of the contest. From there, senior Frank Cicero (Venetia, Pa.) played the next 23:05 minutes in the cage, allowing six goals while making six saves. Sophomore Christian Dzwilewski (Huntington, N.Y.) and junior Jake Goodelman (Wantagh, N.Y.) split time in net for the final 30 minutes of the contest.
Kevin Benzing earned the win for the Bobcats in goal, making seven saves while allowing two goals in 52:55 minutes of action. Haggerty led the team's offense with six points on two goals and four assists.
The Friars return to action on Tuesday, March 16 at 3:00 p.m. against No. 19 Massachusetts in Amherst.
