LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team (0-6, 0-1 BIG EAST) fell to Siena College (4-3, 1-0 MAAC) by the score of 11-9 on Saturday, March 27 in Loudonville, N.Y. The Friars and Saints entered the fourth quarter with the score tied at eight, but Siena posted three of the game's final four goals to secure the victory. Junior midfielder Mike Feldberg (Voorhees, N.J.) paced the Friars with a career-high three goals while sophomore midfielder Jake Nolan (Westport, Conn.) added a personal-best three assists for PC.
After Siena posted the first four goals of the game, the Friars got on the board with a score by sophomore attackman Chris Mahoney (Centerport, N.Y.) off an assist by junior midfielder Evan Helda (Charlotte, N.C.). The goal began a 3-0 run by the Friars that included scores by Feldberg and Helda to pull PC within one goal at 4-3 at the 2:43 mark of the first quarter.
Siena's Bryan Neufeld opened the scoring in the second quarter with a goal to push the Saints' lead back to two at 5-3 at the 13:23 mark. Less than two minutes later, the Friars responded with a goal by sophomore attackman Evan Olsen (Tampa, Fla.) off a good feed from Nolan (5-4). Siena continued the back-and-forth scoring with a goal by Kyle Curry at the 9:19 mark to move the Saints back ahead by two at 6-4. Neufeld added another goal with 7:56 to play in the quarter to give Siena a 7-4 lead, but Feldberg posted his second goal off another assist by Nolan with 1:30 left in the half to cut the Saints' advantage to two (7-5) at halftime.
Two goals by freshman midfielder Kyle Dexter (Victoria, British Columbia) early in the third quarter helped the Friars' knot the score at seven with 11:45 to play in the period. The game remained tied until the 6:12 mark, when Chris Roth scored unassisted for Siena to move the Saints back ahead, 8-7. The Friars posted the final score of the period on Feldberg's third goal of the game to tie the score at eight heading into the fourth quarter. PC out-scored Siena 3-1 in the third frame and won all five face-offs in the quarter.
Siena used a 3-0 run over the majority of the fourth quarter to take an 11-8 lead with 1:58 remaining in the contest. The Friars moved back within two scores on a goal by senior Colin Tigh (Garden City, N.Y.) with 54 seconds left, but could not move any closer for the rest of the game.
The Friars won 13-of-23 faceoffs in the game picked up 30 ground balls to the Saints' 28. PC also held an 8-to-7 edge in saves for the contest.
Sophomore Tim Finnegan played the opening 31:40 in the cage for PC, allowing five goals while making six saves. He was replaced by senior Frank Cicero (Venetia, Pa.) who allowed two goals in 8:05 minutes of action. Sophomore Christian Dzwilewski (Huntington, N.Y.) took the loss for the Friars, allowing four goals while making two saves in the final 20:15 of the game.
Brent Herbst earned the win for Siena, making seven saves while allowing nine goals in 60:00 minutes of action. Roth led the Saints offensively with five points on two goals and three assists.
The Friars return to action with a 2:00 p.m. contest against Bryant University on Saturday, April 3 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The game will be aired live on WOON 1240 AM in Rhode Island.
