ORLANDO, Fla. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by Georgia Southern, 3-2, and by Boston College, 2-1, on Friday, March 5 in the first day of the UCF Tournament.
Against Georgia Southern, the Friars took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as senior Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) drove in a run on a fielder's choice. However, Georgia Southern scored twice in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Friars responded in the top of the fifth when sophomore Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) drove in a run to tie the score, 2-2. The Eagles regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Jenny Side hit an RBI single.
Providence trailed Boston College, 1-0, in the fifth inning but sophomore Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) hit an RBI double to tie the game, 1-1. BC responded in the seventh inning with a run and held on for the win. In the pitcher's circle, sophomore Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) pitched the first five innings and allowed one run on four hits while striking out four batters.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, March 6 at when they face Harvard and tournament host UCF.
