PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team dropped its 2010 season-opener, 3-0, to the University of Maine. The game was played at the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono, Maine.

Maine took an early, 1-0, lead when Stephanie Gardiner scored with an assist from Maire Dineen off a corner 6:47 into the game. The Friars were able to get off four shots in the half but were unable to convert on any of the chances.

The Black Bears' Jocelyn Mitchell tacked on two more goals early in the second half to give Maine a 3-0 advantage.

Providence and Maine tied in total shots, each team recording 10, while Maine held the advantage on corners 8-6. The Friars held the advantage in shots on goal, 8-5. Ashlyn Hudson (Stoughton, Mass.) and Emilie Stehly (Valley Center, Calif.) each had two.

Providence will take on No. 9 Boston College on Tuesday, August 31 at 7:00 p.m. at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. It will mark the home-opener for the Friars.
