PROVIDENCE, R.I. - PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (1-6, 0-0 BIG EAST): The Providence College field hockey team returns to action on Sunday, September 19 when it hosts Columbia at 1:00 p.m. The game will be held at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. On September 15, Providence earned its first victory of the season, defeating Northeastern 2-0.
Seniors Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) and Jaime Lipski (Dallas, Pa.) each scored a goal in the victory against Northeastern. Goalkeeper Shannon DiStefano (Longmeadow, Mass.) recorded four saves and registered her first-career shutout. Distefano has posted a 1.86 goals against average and a .742 save percentage in 300 minutes of action.
This will be the first-ever meeting between Providence and Columbia. On Friday, September 24, the Friars will open BIG EAST Conference play when they travel to face the University of Connecticut. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. in Storrs, Conn.
COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY (3-1, 0-0 IVY LEAGUE): Columbia enters the weekend with a 3-1 record. On Saturday, September 18, the Lions square-off against Brown in Providence, R.I. before traveling across town to face the Friars on Sunday, September 19. Columbia is coming off a 5-1 loss to Villanova on September 12. Gabby Kozlowski leads the Lions offense with 12 points on six goals. Julia Garrison has provided two goals and three assists for seven points on the season. Christie O'Hara has seen 300 minutes in goal, and owns a 3.00 goals against average and a .630 save percentage.
