Final Stats

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated BIG EAST foe Villanova, 3-2, in overtime on Saturday, October 8 in Providence, R.I.

The Friars took a 1-0 lead into halftime as freshman Steph Guglielmo (Castle Rock, Colo.) recorded her first collegiate goal with 1:18 left in the first half. Guglielmo scored off a feed from senior Deirdre Quinn (Walpole, Mass.), while the Friars were a player down due to a yellow card. Providence held an 8-3 advantage in shots and 5-4 edge in corners during the opening half.

In the second half, Villanova recorded back-to-back goals at 52:10 and 54:30 to take a 2-1 lead. Lauren Wilson tallied the first as she touched in a bouncing ball sent her way by Keira Zambon. Jessica Swoboda converted the second, unassisted, off a rebound.

Providence kept fighting down the stretch and it paid off. At the 64:19 mark, sophomore Sally Adua (Madison, Conn.) knocked in the game-tying goal off a rebound. Adua's equalizer set the score at 2-2 and forced overtime.

In the overtime, the Wildcats had the first good scoring chance as they were awarded a penalty corner. Swoboda took a hard shot from the right side of the circle, but Providence goalkeeper Shannon DiStefano (Longmeadow, Mass.) directed the long rebound off her pads to a teammate, leading to a fast-break opportunity. Guglielmo brought the ball into the circle, where Villanova goalkeeper Megan Goelz cleared out the one-on-one chance.

Possession remained with the Friars for the remainder of play, until freshman Daniella Bernasconi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) connected on the game winner 7:18 into overtime. Fellow freshman Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany) carried the ball along the right endline and attempted to score, but was denied by Goelz. A scramble in front of the cage ensued and Bernasconi collected the ball and slipped it into the goal for the win.

Providence improves to 1-2 in BIG EAST play with the victory, while Villanova falls to 1-2.

For the game, Providence outshot Villanova, 14-11. The Friars also held the advantage in penalty corners, 12-9.

The Friars return to action on Monday, October 10 at Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H.
