Softball Game Versus Syracuse Moved to Thursday, April 14

Providence, R.I. - The Providence College softball game against Syracuse, which was scheduled to be played tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. in Providence, R.I., has been postponed because of inclement weather. The doubleheader has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 14, at PC's Raymond Field. Game one is scheduled for Noon. Providence's game versus Boston University scheduled for Thursday, April 14, has been cancelled, and will not be rescheduled.

The Providence College softball team (17-21, 3-6 BIG EAST) will host a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader against Syracuse (24-10, 3-5 BIG EAST) on Thursday, April 14, on Raymond Field. The first game is set to start at Noon.

The Friars are coming off of a 4-1 week, including a 2-1 mark in BIG EAST. On Wednesday, April 6, the Friars defeated the Yale Bulldogs in a doubleheader, 12-10, 2-1. In game one, senior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) hit a walk off-grand slam and freshman Sarah Howard (Georgetown, Ky.) earned her first-career victory. In the second game of the day, the Friars won, again, in walk off fashion, but this time in the form of a single by junior Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.). Junior Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) earned her team-leading ninth win of the season, after giving up only one run in seven innings pitched.

On Saturday, April 9, the Friars split a doubleheader at St. John's, 4-0, 6-8. Freshman Mackenzie Morgan (Sulphur Springs, Texas), junior Huber and Stratton each notched an RBI in the first game. Sophomore Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out five. In the second game, freshman Corinne Rubright (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) notched a three-run homer to give the Friars a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Red Storm responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning and went on to win the game, 8-6.

On Sunday, April 10, Providence and St. John's squared off for the final game of a three-game series, which the Friars won, 9-2. Senior Ava Pandiani (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Stratton each hit two home runs and combined for five RBI. Clauss earned her second win of the week and registered a 0.74 ERA in three appearances.

Last week, Stratton lead the offense with a .474 batting average, 1.368 slugging percentage, nine hits, eight runs scored, five home runs and 11 RBI. For the season, she leads the team with eight extra-base hits, and is second on the team in both home runs (seven) and RBIs (29).

Scouting Syracuse: The Orange enter the game against Providence after losing their last five games. On Sunday, April 10, Syracuse fell to Notre Dame in a doubleheader, 2-9, 4-7. The prior weekend, the Orange lost three-straight games to USF, 1-3, 3-7, 0-4. Syracuse's last win came in a 10-2 route of Rutgers on Sunday, March 27.

Offensively, the Orange are led by Stephanie Watts who has registered a .330 batting average and a .688 slugging percentage. Watts leads the team in home runs (nine), runs scored (31), is second on the team in hits (112) and RBIs (27). Hallie Gibbs leads the team in RBIs (37) and is second in home runs (six).

In the pitcher's circle for the Orange is Jenna Caira has registered a 1.78 ERA, a 15-8 record, 14 complete games and 162 strikeouts. Stacy Kuwik also has been solid with a 9-1 record and a 2.26 ERA. Kuwik has appeared in 20 games, pitched over 70 innings and has 65 strike outs. -GO FRIARS-
