Softball Opens Final Series Of 2011 Against Georgetown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team will open a three-game series versus Georgetown this weekend. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 30, with game one scheduled for Noon. On Sunday, May 1, the two teams will wrap up the series at Noon, with the Friars honoring their three graduating seniors in a pre-game ceremony.

Providence (21-28, 5-12 BIG EAST) enters the weekend series winning four of its last seven games, including a doubleheader sweep over Rhode Island on April 19. Junior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) has caught fire and enters the weekend on a seven-game hit streak. During the streak, Abrams has registered a .439 batting average, five runs, 12 hits, two home runs and two RBIs. On the season Abrams leads the team in batting average (.354), hits (58), runs (33) and is second in home runs (nine).

Senior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) recorded her 19th home run of her career on Thursday, April 28, against Boston College to move her into fifth place all-time. Stratton passed current head coach Kerri Jacklets who had 18 career homers.

Over the last seven games, freshman Corinne Rubright (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) has a .941 slugging percentage and a .412 batting average. Rubright has tallied seven hits, three home runs and six RBIs.

In the pitcher's circle for the Friars, sophomore Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) has nine wins on the season and has appeared in 30 games. Clauss has pitched over 148 innings and is ninth in the BIG EAST with 114 strikeouts.

Georgetown's (12-37, 5-9 BIG EAST) Jenna Stark sets the pace for the Hoyas offensively. Stark leads the team in batting average (.316), hits (42) and is second in RBIs (17). Melissa Conners and Mackensey Carter sees a majority of the action in the circle. Conners has recorded a 3.79 ERA in 27 appearances. Carter has a team best nine wins and a 3.98 ERA in 162 innings pitched.
