Softball Set To Host A Doubleheader Versus Yale

Providence, R.I. - The Providence College softball team (13-20, 1-5 BIG EAST) will host a doubleheader against Yale (7-13, 1-3 IVY) tomorrow at PC's Raymond Field. Game one is set to start at 2:30 p.m.

The Friars posted a 2-3 record last week. On Tuesday, March 29, the Friars defeated Fairfield, 2-0. Junior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) notched a triple to center field and was driven in by the next batter, junior Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.). In the seventh inning, the Friars extended their lead to 2-0 behind an RBI double by senior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.). Junior Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) earned the victory after pitching seven scoreless innings and striking out six batters.

The next day, Providence defeated Hartford, 6-0, and won its sixth of its last eight games. The Friars jumped out to an early 1-0, lead in the first inning behind an RBI single by sophomore Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.) and never looked back. Sophomore Stephanie Kiesel (Ramona, Calif.), freshman Corrine Rubright (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), freshman Morgan Culver (Seaford, Del.), Huber and Stratton each notched an RBI. Sophomore Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) pitched a gem, giving up no runs and allowing only two hits in seven innings.

Providence then took on Notre Dame in a three-game series over the weekend and fell, 12-4, 7-3, 9-0. In the series, sophomore Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) notched two homers while Stratton and Bryant each notched a long ball of their own.

As a team, the Friars have notched 27 home runs in 33 games played and have scored 112 runs. Bryant leads the team in hits (34), home runs (9) and RBI (29). In the pitcher's circle, Grosso leads the charge with a 3.43 ERA and an 8-11 record. Grosso has appeared in 19 games and pitched 102 innings.

Scouting Yale:

Yale is 7-13 overall and 1-4 in the month of April. The Bulldogs enter the game versus Providence after dropping two games to Cornell on Saturday, April 2, and splitting a doubleheader versus Princeton on Saturday, April 3. Against Cornell, the Bulldogs fell, 3-0, 10-2. Yale won its first game of a doubleheader against Princeton, 9-0, but fell in game two, 13-12.

Offensively, the Bulldogs are led by Jennifer Ong who has registered a .329 batting average and leads the team in hits (23), doubles (eight), home runs (three) and is second on in home runs (three). Chelsey Dunham leads the team with 73 innings pitched and a 3.36 ERA. Dunham has a 5-8 record in 14 appearances.
