Final Stats

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Pacific, 4-1, on Sunday, September 11 at Lennon Field in Providence, R.I.

Providence took a 2-1 advantage into halftime, yielding the only Pacific goal with just 29 seconds left on the clock. Freshman Danielle Bernasconi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) got Providence on the board just 3:43 into the contest as she deflected the ball into the cage off a feed from sophomore Hillary Anderson (Barrington, R.I.). Anderson sent the ball in from the right side of the circle, while Bernasconi set up in front of the cage to challenge the goalkeeper.

Sophomore Brittany Ross (Scarborough, Maine) gave the Friars a 2-0 lead at 33:29 as she carried the ball through the midfield and into the circle. She rifled a low hard shot from the right side into the left hand side of the cage for her team-best third goal of the season.

Pacific cracked the scoring column with just 29 seconds left in the opening half as Melissa Maultsby lifted a back-handed shot from the left side of the circle to the right side of the goal.

Pacific held a 7-6 advantage in shots during the opening half, but the Friars recorded a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. The Tigers held the advantage in penalty corners, 3-1.

In the second half, the Friars scored two unanswered goals for the 4-1 victory. Freshman Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany) started things off at 48:50 when she connected on a corner play. Anderson registered the assist, her second of the game. Ross closed out the scoring at 61:40 when she knocked in her second goal of the game, unassisted. Ross fired a shot from the left side of the circle to the lower left of the goal.

Senior Shannon DiStefano (Longmeadow, Mass.) picked up her second win of the season in goal with five saves. The Friars outshot the Tigers, 14-13, for the game. Penalty corners were even at four apiece.
