PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated BIG EAST rival Villanova, 2-1, on Saturday, October 29 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars improve to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova drops to 3-10 overall (0-5 BIG EAST).

Providence sealed the victory with two first-half goals. Freshman Adrienne Houle (Burlington, Ontario) gave the Friars a 1-0 lead just 3:15 into the game with a deflection at the right post. Sophomore Salene Shaffer (Millerstown, Pa.) was credited with the assist. Senior Kasey Bulman (Farmingdale, N.J.) scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 26:15 mark with a tip-in at the right post. Senior Sally Adua (Madison, Conn.) earned the assist on the play. For Houle and Bulman, their respective goals were their first tallies of the season.

Villanova got within one (2-1) in the 63rd minute during a penalty corner. Maddy Harding scored on a direct shot that bounced up and over the goalkeeper and into the back of the cage. Lauren Wilson and Jessica Swoboda were awarded assists.

Providence out-shot Villanova, 14-9, and held a 6-4 advantage in penalty corners during the game.

Deidra Clymer (South Windsor, Conn.) earned the victory in the cage for Providence with two saves. Alex Diekmann made nine saves for the Wildcats.

Providence returns to action on Sunday, October 20 against Vermont at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. Prior to the start of the game, the Friars will honor their six seniors. The game also serves as the back drop for the program's annual "Pink Game", which helps support the fight against breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game. Donations also will be taken during the game and all proceeds will benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.
