VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team topped Villanova, 11-10, in its season finale on Saturday, April 26 at Villanova Stadium in Villanova, Pa. The win marked the Friars' first BIG EAST victory of the season. Senior midfielder Robby Stack (Medfield, Mass.) sniped the game-winner with 50 seconds left to play in the second period of overtime.
Junior Greg FitzMaurice (Huntington, N.Y.) opened the game with a goal at the 13:40 mark on a feed from senior Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) to give the Friars a 1-0 lead. Seniors Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) and Bryan Annecchino (Darien, Conn.) notched back-to-back goals to increase the Friars' lead to 3-0 (10:06). Villanova tallied its first goal at the 9:11 mark to make it a 3-1 game. Barton answered with a finish to give the Friars a three goal lead, 4-1. In the final 5:42 of the first quarter, the Wildcats outscored the Friars, 2-1. Providence carried a 5-3 advantage into the second 15 minutes of play.
Villanova opened the second quarter with a goal at the 8:40 mark (5-4). Freshman Keenan Assaraf (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) added a goal with 3:58 remaining in the half (6-4). Providence and Villanova exchanged goals in the final 2:16 of the quarter and Providence held a two goal lead headed into the break (7-5).
Barton tallied back-to-back goals to open the third quarter to give the Friars a 9-5 advantage. In the final 3:30 of the quarter, the Friars were outscored by the Wildcats, 2-1. Headed into the final 15 minutes of play, Providence led Villanova by a three goal margin (10-7).
Villanova held the Friars scoreless in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats outscored the Friars, 3-0, to make it a 10-10 game. With the game tied at end of regulation, the afternoon match-up was sent to overtime.
The first overtime period was scoreless. Despite being outshot by Villanova, 5-1, the Friars and Wildcats remained tied 10-10.
Stack secured a Friar victory when he buried a finish with 50 seconds remaining in the second overtime. Stack's snipe served as his first goal of the 2014 season. Senior face-off specialist Ryan Shaw (East Hampton, N.Y.) won 11-of-27 attempts at the "X" and picked up six groundballs.
Senior goalie Tyler Himes (Spring City, Pa.) recorded his 15th consecutive start for the Friars. He finished the game with 12 saves. In addition, Himes picked up three ground balls.
