Cancelled Event: Softball versus Tarleton State

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team open its 2015 home games with a seven-game homestand, featuring two BIG EAST series. The first series is versus Butler in a three-game series at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 2 and at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 4. Following the BIG EAST opener with Butler, the Friars will host Seton Hall on Monday, April 6 and Tuesday, April 7. Monday's games will be a double header with the start times of 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., while Tuesday's single game will begin at noon. Following the conference action, the Friars host non-conference opponent Connecticut at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8.
Providence is led by senior Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) who has a team-best .383 batting average. Harrell also ranks second on the team in runs (10) and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly honor roll on March 30 after batting .625, adding three RBI, two doubles and a stolen base in a two game series against DePaul (March 28). Another Friar contender to look out for is senior Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) who has a team-best 19 RBI.
On the mound, sophomore Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) leads the Friars in pitching with a 6.35 ERA and three wins in 10 appearances. Huntly also has pitched 56.2 innings and accumulated 22 strikeouts.
The Friars have a 5-13 record this season. Last time out, Providence played a two-game series against DePaul in Chicago, Ill. In a high-scoring game, Providence fell 20-16 in the first game and then fell 6-2 in the second game.
Butler is 14-17 on the season. Alex Kotter leads the Bulldogs with a .437 batting average and a team-best 38 hits, while Kristen Boros has a team-high 26 RBI. Pitching for Butler, Kristin Gutierrez has started 15 of the 18 games she has played in, recording a 3.39 ERA and 45 strikeouts.
Seton Hall (14-18) is led by Yasmin Harrell who has a team-best 38 hits and a .362 batting average. Alexis Walkden and Sara Haefeli are tied for the team lead in RBI with 28. Lauren Fischer leads the pitching staff with a 4.20 ERA in 20 appearances (14 starts). Danielle Destaso leads the team in strikeouts with 79.
For UConn (10-20), the Huskies are led by Emily O'Donnell who leads the team in hits (31), batting average (.330) and RBI (19). Lauren Duggan leads the pitchers with a 5.65 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 79.2 innings.
After the seven-game homestand, the Friars hit the road for a conference series against St. John's on Saturday, April 11 and Sunday, April 12. Saturday's game is a doubleheader slated to start at noon and 2:00 p.m. while Sunday's game will start at noon.
