PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College softball team (14-21) defeated Bryant, 9-6, in their PINK OUT game today (Tuesday, April 28). After being behind 5-2 in the top of the fourth, the Friars rallied with six runs in the bottom of the inning to power them to victory.
The Friars were the first to get on the board in the bottom of the first, when freshmen Nadia Kemp (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) doubled to right field to send in sophomore Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.), giving Providence a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third, the Bulldogs (17-31) responded with a Mallory Harrigan home run to tie the game 1-1.
Providence regained the lead in the bottom of the third. Junior Danielle Deraney (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing senior Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) to score. The Friars led 2-1 at the end of the third inning.
In the top of the fourth, Bryant hit three homeruns to add four runs, making the score 5-2 in favor of the Bulldogs.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Friars responded with a homerun of their own by freshman Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.). Mulry also sent senior Sarah Kitterman (Houstan, Texas) home in the process to come within one run of Bryant (5-4). The fourth inning wasn't over yet. Kemp stepped up to bat with the bases loaded and singled to the shortstop, giving Lundstrom enough time to get home, tying the game 5-5. The Friars then regained the lead after senior Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) made it home after freshman Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) hit into a fielder's choice. Next up, Veler scored for Providence after Bryant's second baseman made an error with Kitterman at bat. At the end of the fourth inning, Providence led the game 8-5.
The Friars extended their lead to 9-5 in the bottom of the fifth with a Dederick solo homerun. The homerun marked her 11th of the season.
The Bulldogs closed the gap in the top of the sixth after Jessica Benacquista hit a home run but fell short of a comback to end the game with a 9-6 Friar victory.
On the mound for the Friars, junior Kiara Amos (Malden, Mass.) and freshman Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) shared pitching duties. Amos pitched for the first 3.2 innings, collecting one strikeout, while Ramirez pitched the following 3.1 innings, recording one strikeout and only allowing one earned run for the win. Hayley Bottino of Bryant suffered the loss after pitching for 3.0 innings and allowing two earned runs. Logan Paul also pitched for the Bulldogs, recording three strikeouts and allowing five earned runs.
The Friars are back in action tomorrow (April 29) when they travel to Cambridge, Mass. for a non-conference game against Boston College. The game is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
