Cancelled Event: Softball versus Tarleton State

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team played the first two games of a three-game BIG EAST Conference series against Seton Hall today (Monday, April 6). The Friars (8-15, 3-4 BIG EAST) were victorious in the first game, winning 2-1 with a homerun in extra innings. In the second game Providence fell, 7-4, to Seton Hall (15-19, 4-4 BIG EAST).
In game one of the series, after a scoreless first three innings, the Pirates were the first to get on the board. Sara Haefeli hit a double to center field, sending Alexis Walkden home to give Seton Hall a 1-0 lead.
The Friars responded in the bottom of the sixth inning with freshman Julianna Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) doubling to center field, sending senior Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) home to tie the game 1-1. At the end of the seventh inning, the score was still tied 1-1, sending the game into extra innings.
After sophomore Tayloy Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) shut down the Pirates on the mound in the top of the eighth, Dederick was first up to bat at the bottom of the inning. She wasted no time and hit a home run to propel the Friars to victory in game one of the three game series. The homerun was her seventh on the year.
Huntly pitched 8.0 innings to collect the win for the Friars. She registered four strikeouts and gave up just one earned run. Pitching for Seton Hall, Danielle DeStaso suffered the loss, registering eight strike outs while giving up two earned runs.
In game two of the series, Seton Hall's Walkden hit a solo home run to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Pirates then extended their lead in the top of the third after Walkden again hit a home run, this time to make the score 2-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, while Dederick was on first base, BIG EAST Player of the Week sophomore Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) added another home run to her belt to make tie the game, 2-2. The home run marks Lundstrom's fifth homerun in the last four games and a total of seven this season.
Seton Hall responded in the top of the fifth with a two-run homerun by Haefeli. Walkden and Yasmin Harrell both scored to make it 5-2 in favor of the Pirates.
Junior Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) pulled Providence closer, 5-3, with a triple to center, to score freshmen Nadia Kemp (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.).
Seton Hall was back at it in the top of the sixth, scoring two unearned runs to increase its lead to 7-3.
Kemp hit a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh to bring PC's deficit to three (7-4). Baldassari later hit another triple with two outs in the inning, but the Friars were unable to send her home, ending the game.
Huntly and freshman Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) shared pitching duties for Providence. Ramirez suffered the loss after pitching 5.0 innings, registering one strikeout and allowing five earned runs, while Huntly pitched for 2.0 innings, recording one strikeout and not allowing any earned runs. Lauren Fischer and Casey Moses shared pitching for Seton Hall. Fischer recorded the win, pitching for 6.0 innings, while Moses pitched for 1.0 innings.
The Friars are back in action tomorrow (Tuesday, April 7) to play Seton Hall in the final game of a three-game series. The game is slated for 11:00 a.m.
