PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College softball team (16-22) won the first two games of the Creighton (21-21) series today (Saturday, May 2) at Raymond Field. In the first game, the Friars came away with a 5-2 win, while the second game saw Providence win 6-3.

In the first game, the Friars were the first to get on the board. In the bottom of the second, freshman Brittney Veler (Santa Rose, Calif.) hit her fifth homerun of the season to give the Friars a 1-0 lead.

Providence extended its lead in the bottom of the second. Senior Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) singled to center field, sending freshman Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) home. Senior Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) was next up to bat, also hitting a single, to send sophomore Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) home. The Friars weren't finished there. Sophomore Nadia Kemp (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) then singled through the left side to send Harrell home. At the end of the third, the Friars led Creighton, 4-0.

The Bluejays responded in the top of the fourth after Liz Dike hit a homerun, sending Michelle Trulin home in the process to make the score 4-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Friars extended their lead to 5-2. Harrell doubled to left center, scoring Lundstrom.

Creighton was unable to catch the Friars in the final innings, ending the game in a 5-2 Providence victory.

On the mound for the Friars, sophomore Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) collected the win. Huntly pitched all seven innings, registering four strikeouts and only allowing two earned runs. For the Bluejays, Sydnee Eck suffered the loss with 6.0 innings pitched, allowing five earned runs.

In the second game of the day, Providence was up 3-0 by the end of the first inning. First, Harrell was at it again, doubling to left center to send Lundstrom home. Next up, Veler grounded out to the third baseman, giving Harrell enough time to get home. To finish the scoring for the first inning, senior Sarah Kitterman (Houston, Texas) singled to third to send Dederick home.

Creighton didn't respond until the top of the fourth inning where they scored three runs to tie the game (3-3).

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, Kemp stepped up to bat. She grounded out to the shortstop, while Lundstrom reached home to regain the lead (4-3), scoring for the fourth time on the day. Veler made it count for her next at bat, extending the Friars lead to 6-3. She doubled down the right-field line to collect two RBI with Dederick and Harrell both scoring.

The entirety of the game remained scoreless, giving Providence a 6-3 win and a two-game sweep.

Huntly recorded another win, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing only three earned runs while registering two strikeouts. For Creighton, Micaela Whitney suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs in 6.0 innings pitched.

The Friars are back in action tomorrow (May 3) for their final regular season and home game of the season against Creighton. The game is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. The team also will honor the contributions the senior class have made as part of senior day, starting prior to the game.
