OMAHA, Neb. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by Creighton in two games on Wednesday, March 23 in Omaha, Neb. In game one, the Friars were defeated 11-3 and in game two, the Friars were defeated 14-12. With the two losses, the Friars moved to 12-14 (0-2 BIG EAST).
In the top of the first of game one, the Friars jumped out to a 1-0 lead with an RBI from junior Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) who was hit by a pitch. Creighton went on to score eight runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead, 8-1.
In the top of the third, Providence tallied two runs to cut Creighton's lead to five runs, 8-3. Graduate student Kelsi Luttrell (Mission Viejo, Calif.) hit a two-run home run to left center to send home freshman Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.). The Bluejays added one run in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth inning for the final score, 11-3.
Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) started on the mound, pitched 0.2 innings and allowed five hits. Freshman Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) pitched four innings, she struck out two batters and allowed seven hits.
In game two, the Bluejays jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Friars drove in a run in the top of the second when sophomore Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) reached first on fielder's choice and allowed Lundstrom to score.
Creighton added five runs in the bottom of the second and two runs in the bottom of the third to make the game 9-1.
The Friars tied the game at nine in the top of the fourth when they added eight runs. With the bases loaded, Rurka earned a base on balls which sent home Lundstrom. Junior Nadia Kemp (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) hit a one-run single. Senior Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) hit a single to left field that allowed freshman Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) to score. Lee hit a two-run single through the right side. Lundstrom earned three RBI on a three-run home run.
Creighton pulled ahead with another four runs in the bottom of the fourth, 13-4.
Providence tallied three runs in the top of the sixth to cut Creighton's lead to just one run, 13-12. Lundstrom popped up to left field and drove home Baldassari. Lee scored on a pop up to centerfield from sophomore Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.). Portillo hit a single to left field and drove home Luttrell.
The Bluejays tallied another run in the bottom of the sixth and the Friars could not retaliate for the final score, 14-12.
Sophomore Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) started on the mound and pitched three innings. She struck out two batters and allowed eight hits. McCune recorded the loss after pitching three innings, striking out three batters, and allowing seven hits.
The Friars will return to action for the final game of the three-game series at Creighton at 2:00 p.m. ET on Thursday, March 24.
