CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Providence College softball team defeated Western Michigan, 11-0, and Detroit, 7-1, on Saturday, March 5 in the USF Under Armour Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. With the wins, the Friars improved to 8-8.
In the Friars first game, Providence took the lead with one run in the first on a single from junior
Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.). In the top of the fourth, the Friars tallied seven runs. Senior
Danielle Deraney (Shrewsbury, Mass.) reigisted a two-run double. Senior
Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) singled to shortstop to drive Deraney home. Freshman
Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) singled to right field to allow Baldassari to score. Sophomore
Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) hit a three run single to get the Friars an 8-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Providence tallied three more runs off of a two-run homerun from junior
Nadia Kemp (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.). Veler tallied her fourth RBI of the game with a single to third for the final score, 11-0.
Sophomore
Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) recorded her fourth win of the season, spending five innings on the mound, allowing three hits, and striking out one batter.
In the Friars' second game versus Detroit, Providence tallied three runs in the first. Lundstrom recorded an RBI on a single. In the top of the second, Providence added another run to make the game, 4-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, Detroit added a run, but could not retaliate as the Friars won, 7-1.
Freshman
Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) pitched all five innings recording four hits.
The Friars will return to action for the final game of the USF Under Armour Touranment when they play Cornell tomorrow (March 5) at 9:00 a.m.
