Softball Defeats Boston College, 7-6

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team defeated Boston College, 7-6, on Wednesday, April 27 at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. With the win, the Friars improved to 17-26, while the Eagles moved to 24-21.

The Friars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a single to center field from sophomore Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) to send home graduate student Kelsi Luttrell (Mission Viejo, Calif.).

In the top of the third, the Eagles hit a three-run home run to take lead, 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Providence tallied two runs on an error to tie the game at three. Junior Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) hit a single that sent home a run to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) hit a single to center field that tallied a run to improve the Friars' lead to 5-3.

Sophomore Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) hit a two-run double to make the game 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth.

In the top of the seventh, Boston College hit a double to allow three to score to cut the Friars lead to one run, for the final score 7-6.

Junior Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) started on the mound, pitched 2.0 innings, allowed five hits, and struck out one batter. Sophomore Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.), recorded the win, pitched 5.0 innings, allowed five hits, and struck out three batters.

The Friars will return to action with a three-game BIG EAST series versus Georgetown on Saturday, April 30 (12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.) and on Sunday, May 1 (12:00 p.m.)
