Softball Defeats Georgetown In Two Games

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team defeated Georgetown in two games on Saturday, April 30 at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. In game one, the Friars won, 5-2, after taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning. In the second game versus Georgetown, the Friars won, 8-4. With the two wins, the Friars improved to 19-26 (4-12 BIG EAST).

In the bottom of the first, junior Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) hit a triple to right field that brought in one run for the Friars. Sophomore Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) reached first on an error, which sent home another run for a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) hit a two-run home run for a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

In the bottom of the second, Lundstrom earned her second RBI of the game with a ground out to shortstop that sent home another run for a 5-0 lead.

Georgetown tallied one run in the top of the third and another run in the top of sixth to make the game 5-2.

Junior Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) pitched 7.0 innings, struck out one batter, and allowed nine hits.

In game two, the Friars jumped out to a 4-0 lead with an unearned run on an error and a three-run home run from Rurka in the bottom of the first.

In the bottom of the second, freshman Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) hit her first career homerun to center field. Rurka tallied another RBI in the bottom of the second on a double to center field to make the game 6-0.

Georgetown added two runs in the top of the third to cut the Friars' lead to four runs, 6-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, freshman Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) hit a triple to center field to send in two runs for an 8-2 lead.

The Hoyas scored a run on a single in the top of the sixth and another run in the top of the seventh for the final score, 8-4.

The Friars will return to action at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 1 at Glay Field to finish the BIG EAST series with Georgetown.
