Cancelled Event: Softball versus Tarleton State

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by DePaul in two games on Saturday, April 9 at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. In game one the Friars were defeated, 12-6, and in game two the Friars were defeated, 8-6. With the losses, the Friars moved to 13-19 (1-6 BIG EAST), while DePaul improved to 15-20 (7-0 BIG EAST).
In the top of the first of game one the Friars got a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run from junior Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.). DePaul tied the game at two in the top of the second. Providence got a 3-2 lead with a home run from Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) in the bottom of the second. The Friars added another run in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly from senior Danielle Deraney (Shrewsbury, Mass.) to send home sophomore Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) to make the game 4-2.
In the top of the fifth, the Blue Demons tallied three runs for a 5-4 lead. DePaul added another three runs in the top of the sixth for an 8-4 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Rurka hit a two-run homerun to cut DePaul's lead to 8-6. DePaul added four runs in the top of the seventh for the final score, 12-6.
Junior Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) pitched 5.2 innings, struck out three batters, and allowed seven hits.
In game two, Providence got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with a single from Portillo to send home sophomore Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) for a 1-0 lead. The Blue Demons retaliated with a run in the top of the third to tie the game at one.
In the bottom of the third, graduate student Kelsi Luttrell (Mission Viejo, Calif.) hit a two-run single to put the Friars up, 3-1.
In the top of the fourth, DePaul added four runs to take the lead, 5-3. DePaul added another two runs in the top of the fifth to make the game, 7-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, freshman Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) hit a double to left field to knock in senior Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.). Lundstrom hit another double to allow Lee to score. Rurka hit the Friars third double of the inning to allow Lundstrom to score, putting the Friars down by one, 7-6.
The Blue Demons scored another run in the top of the seventh for the final score, 8-6.
Sophomore Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) pitched all seven innings, struck out four batters, and allowed seven hits.
The Friars will return to action for game three versus DePaul at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 10 at Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
