Softball Defeats Butler On Final Day of Weekend

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College Softball team played the Butler University Bulldog on Sunday, April 9. The Friars defeated the Bulldogs 7-5 to improve to 12-19 on the season and 3-6 in BIG EAST play. Butler's record is now 17-19 (3-6).

Butler controlled the early stages of the game, scoring four runs in the bottom of the 1^st and another run in the 2^nd inning.

Butler led the game 5-0 and held the Friars to only one hit until the bottom of the 4^th inning. Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) began the inning by hitting an infield single. After Butler got two quick outs, Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) hit a two run home run to cut the lead to 5-2.

Providence continued its momentum into the bottom of the 5^th. Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) began the inning by drawing a walk. After a quick out, Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) hit a double to left. Veler then drew a walk to load the bases. Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) drew a walk to force in Compton and bring the score to 5-3. Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) continued her hot streak by hitting a two RBI single to drive in Veler and Lundstrom. The Bulldogs changed pitchers but Rurka stepped up and drove in both Mulry and Portillo with a RBI single. The two runs brought the score to 7-5.

Butler was unable to score in the final two innings as the Friars took the game, 7-5, and the series, 2 games to 1.

Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) was the pitcher of record for Providence. Trinidad pitched 6 innings of relief, allowing 0 runs and 2 hits. This is Trinidad's first BIG EAST win and improves her season record to 2-3.

Lundstrom, Veler and Rurka each tallied two hits for Providence.

The Friars next play against DePaul in Chicago, Ill. on April 14-15.
