Providence Softball Opens Season At UCF Tournament

SANFORD, FLA. - The Providence College women's softball team opened up its season at the UCF "Friends of Jaclyn" Tournament on Friday, Feb. 9. The Friars dropped both of their opening day games.

GAME ONE NOTES:
 Providence got the game going early by scoring in the third inning. Sophomore Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Pa.) opened the inning with a triple to right center field. She would be brought home by an RBI single by senior Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.).

The score would prove to not be enough as the Fighting Illini scored nine unanswered runs in the late stages of the game.

Compton, Veler, junior Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.), senior Paige Muiry (West Roxbury, Mass.), and junior Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) all recorded hits in the game.

Senior Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) got the start and went 3.2 innings, giving up six runs. She was the pitcher of record.

Graduate student Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) pitched the final 1.1 innings in relief of Ramirez.

GAME TWO NOTES:
 The North Florida Osprey held the Friars scoreless in their second game of the season.

Lee and Veler were the only two players to record hits.

Junior Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) was the starting pitcher for Providence, going 4.2 innings and allowing six runs. Freshman Olivia Sprofera (Mahwah, N.J.) pitched 2.1 innings of relief of McCune.

ON DECK:
 The Friars return to action for a double header on day two (Saturday, Feb. 10) of the UCF "Friends of Jaclyn" Tournament. Providence will take on South Alabama at 11:00 a.m. before facing host Central Florida at 1:30 p.m.
