PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence Softball team defeated cross-town rival Brown University on Tuesday, April 17. The Friars defeated the Bears, 9-3, to move to 10-24 on the season.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
 - The Bears struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
- The Friars responded in the bottom of the first when Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) drew a walk to score Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.).
- The scoring continued in the inning when Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Pa.) hit a double to score Mulry and Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) to make the score 3-1.
- Providence drove in another run in the bottom of the second when Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) hit a double to score Annie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) and make the score 4-1.
- Brown scored another run in the top of the third to cut the lead to 3-2.
- Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) hit a three-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth to drive in Alison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) and Veler and make the score 7-2.
- Rurka hit a homerun of her own, when she hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth to drive in Flego and make the score 9-2.
- Brown added a run in the top of the seventh to make the score 9-3 but would not score again as the Friars held on to win.
- Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) got the start for Providence, going 3.2 innings and only allowing two runs. Only one of the runs was earned.
- Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) was credited for the win as she pitched 3.1 innings while only allowing two hits and one run.
- Rurka led the team by going 3-3 on the day.

ON DECK:
 The Friars travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to play a three-game series against the Butler Bulldogs on April 21-22.
