Payton Dunbar's Career-High 22 Points Paces Friars In 70-61 Victory Over Boston College

Sabou Gueye recorded her first double-double as a Friar with 16 points and 12 boards.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball used a well-balanced effort to defeat Boston College, 70-61, on Nov. 15 in Providence, R.I. Payton Dunbar led three Friars in double figures with a career-best 22 points and Sabou Gueye posted her first double-double as a Friar with 16 points and 12 boards. The Friars improved to 2-1 on the season, while Boston College dropped to 3-2 overall.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Boston College used an 8-0 run during a two-minute span early in the quarter to claim an 8-4 lead.
Princess Moody tied the game, 10-10, on a put-back with 1:23 on the clock.
• The Eagles closed the quarter on a 6-0 run spanning the final 1:13 of play (16-10). 
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The Friars started the frame on a 7-0 run to take a 17-16 lead with 7:41 on the clock.
• Providence pushed its lead to 34-27, forcing a Boston College timeout with 1:58 left in the frame.
• The Friars' defense held the Eagles scoreless over the final 2:46 and maintained its seven-point advantage at the half (34-27).
• Dunbar paced the offense with 11 points on 4-7 shooting and added two rebounds and two assists.
• Gueye recorded six points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots in the first half.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• A three pointer from Dunbar gave the Friars a 10-point lead, but Boston College responded with five-straight points to get within 39-34 with 7:24 on the clock.
• Dunbar answered with her fourth three of the game and Teneisia Brown followed with a lay-in off an offensive board to push the lead back to 10 with 5:53 to play (44-34).
• Providence was held without a field goal for over four minutes until Audrey Shields grabbed an offensive board after a missed free throw and scored uncontested.
• Dunbar followed with five-straight points to make it a 10-0 Friar run, extending the lead to 55-42.
• The Friars led 55-45 at the intermission.
• Dunbar scored 11 points in the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a career-high 22 points.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• The Friars held BC without a field goal for 3:52 heading into the media timeout, helping PC maintain a double-digit lead (62-51) with 5:00 to play.
• BC's field-goal drought ended with a baseline three to make the score 62-54 with 3:24 left.
• Brown converted a timely lay-up on the Friars' next possession, but the Eagles hit another three with 1:52 on the clock (64-57).
• Brown later converted two free throws with 45-seconds left and Orlagh Gormley collected a steal on the defensive end. Gormley was fouled and she made one of two attempts to give PC a 68-59 lead.
• Gormley sealed the Friars' victory with a pair of free throws with 16-seconds remaining to make the final, 70-61.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• The Friars snapped a five-game winless streak to Boston College with today's 70-61 win.
• Providence last defeated Boston College on Nov. 17, 2019. On that day, the Friars claimed a 70-60 victory in Providence, R.I.
• Dunbar paced three Friars in double figures with a career-high 22 points on 8-14 shooting, including a 5-10 showing from beyond the arc.
• Gueye recorded her first double-double as a Friar and third of her career with 16 points and 12 rebounds. She added three assists, three blocks and one steal.
• Gueye has scored in double figures during each of Providence's three games this season.
• Brown finished the day with 13 points and seven rebounds. 
• Gormley recorded six points, four rebounds, five assists and a career-high five steals. She's recorded 5+ assists in each of the last two games.
• Providence outscored BC in the paint, 34-16.
• PC shot a season-high 48.1-percent from the field (26-54), while holding Boston College below 40-percent (.377, 20-53).
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 18 and will host Northeastern for its annual Project Providence Game. More than 1,100 local elementary and middle school children will be in attendance for the event. Tip-off is slated for 11:00 a.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
