Last Game
- The No. 16/15 Providence College men's hockey team was defeated by UMass Lowell, 5-1, in the back-end of a home-and-home series on Saturday (Nov. 1) at Tsongas Center.
- UMass Lowell thought they got on the board just 17 seconds into the game but after review their attempt did not cross the goal line. On the play, the River Hawks' Mirko Buttazzoni was assessed a game misconduct.
- Providence killed off both penalties in the first period and nearly cashed in on the man-down as Julius Sumpf's breakaway attempt rang off the post.
- The River Hawks opened the scoring at 4:01 of the second period as Jay Ahearn scored off an odd-man rush.
- UMass Lowell extended the lead to 2-0 with a shorthanded goal by TJ Schweighardt.
- Providence responded on the power play just 34 seconds later on Jonathan Fauchon's fourth strike of the season. Logan Sawyer and John Mustard were credited with the assists.
- The River Hawks cashed in a pair of power play goals in the third period from Lee Parks and Nate Misskey after PC's Roger McQueen was give five and game for grabbing the facemask.
- Jak Vaarwerk added an empty-net goal to account for the final scoring.
- The Friars' four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1) was snapped on Saturday.
 
Scouting the Huskies:
- UConn enters this weekend at 4-3-1 overall and 2-1-0 in Hockey East play. The Huskies tied Harvard, 1-1, and defeated Merrimack, 5-1, last weekend at home.
- Junior Jake Richard leads the way for the Huskies with seven points on two goals and five assists, followed up by Mike Murtagh's seven points on three goals and four assists. After scoring 29 goals last season, junior Joey Muldowney returns for the Huskies with five goals over the first eight games this season.
- In goal, senior Tyler Muszelik has started seven of eight games, posting a 4-2-1 record with a 2.14 GAA and .929 save percentage.
- In his 13th season at the helm, Head Coach Mike Cavanaugh (185-197-43) enters the season coming off the program's first NCAA Tournament berth in 2024-25.
 
Series History vs. UConn (16-7-6, .655)
- Providence and UConn met for the first two of three total meetings this weekend during the 2025-26 season. The teams will conclude regular season play at Schneider Arena on March 7.
- Last season, the Friars took four of six points over two meetings, a 3-3 shootout loss at Schneider Arena followed up with a 6-3 win at the XL Center in Hartford. The teams then met in the Hockey East Quarterfinals at the Toscano Ice Forum, where the Huskies prevailed by a 3-1 score.
- Over the last 10 meetings, Providence holds a slim 4-3-3 advantage in the series.
 
Hot Mustard
- Sophomore John Mustard leads the Friars in scoring with eight points in seven games, including goals in five of seven contests.
 
Welcome, CHL'ers
Providence welcomes seven newcomers to the program with CHL experience due to the new NCAA rule change in the offseason: Donovan McCoy (Sudbury - OHL), Jonathan Fauchon (Rimouski - QMJHL), Beau Jelsma (Barrie - OHL), Kale McCallum (Val-d'Ors - QMJHL/U. of New Brunswick), Quinn Mantei (Brandon - WHL), Julius Sumpf (Moncton - QMJHL) and Roger McQueen (Brandon - WHL).
 
Nine Former Friars Make NHL Opening Night Rosters
Nine Providence College alums appeared on NHL rosters submitted for opening night - Jacob Bryson (BUF), Mark Jankowski (CAR), Jake Walman (EDM), Noel Acciari (PIT), Vincent Desharnais (SJ), Max Crozier (TB), Brandon Tanev (UTAH), Brandon Duhaime (WSH) and Parker Ford (WPG).
 
Fau-Sure On the Power Play
Freshman Jonathan Fauchon leads all Hockey East players with four power-play goals this season and ranks fourth overall nationally in that category. Fauchon has scored in three-consecutive games and four in the last five. He has tallied five points over the last three contests.
 
Friars By The Numbers
The Friars are the ninth tallest roster in the NCAA (6'1"), seventh youngest (21.1 years). Providence is just one of only three programs to have one senior on their roster. The Friars boasted the sixth-most NHL players that appeared in games during the 2024-25 season with 14 total.
 
The Saskatchewan Connection
Three members of this year's roster hail from Saskatchewan - Hudson Malinoski, Roger McQueen and Quinn Mantei. Malinoski and McQueen are childhood friends and played together with the Saskatoon Blazers AAA squad in 2021-22. Mantei and McQueen were teammates with the Brandon Wheat Kings from 2022-25.
 
Drafted Friars
Providence boasts seven drafted players on the 2025-26 roster: Tomas Machu (NYI - 2021), Hudson Malinoski (TOR - 2023), John Mustard (CHI - 2024), Julius Sumpf (CHI - 2025), Roger McQueen (ANA - 2025), Logan Sawyer (MTL - 2024) and Philip Svedeback (BOS - 2021). McQueen became the highest draft pick in program history after being selected 10th overall by the Anaheim Ducks in 2025. Friar commit Everett Baldwin was also selected in the 2025 NHL Draft, going to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the fifth round.
 
Three is the Magic Number
The Friars are 237-24-28 all-time under Nate Leaman when scoring three or more goals in a game.
 
After 40
The Friars are 211-12-22 all-time under Nate Leaman when holding a lead after two periods.
