Friars will host the Hoyas in BIG EAST action on Sunday, Dec. 21 at 1:00 p.m. in Providence, R.I.
FRIARS WELCOME GEORGETOWN FOR BIG EAST HOME OPENER... Providence College will host Georgetown in its BIG EAST home opener on Sunday, Dec. 21 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
FRIARS VS. HOYAS ALL-TIME... Providence and Georgetown have met 78 times during the history of the two women's basketball programs. Georgetown leads the all-time series, 45-33. The two teams split the season series in 2024-25, with each team winning a game on the road. The Hoyas and Friars met a third time in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament on March 7 at Mohegan Sun Arena. Georgetown claimed a 58-56 victory in that game.
SCOUTING THE HOYAS... Georgetown enters Sunday's game with a 7-3 overall record (0-1 BIG EAST). The Hoyas are averaging 74.0 points per game as a team, despite having just one player on the roster that is averaging double figures. Khia Miller leads the offense with 10.4 points per game. Victoria Rivera (9.4 ppg) and Laila Jewett (9.0 ppg) are just shy of averaging double figures. Jewett leads the team in assists (3.4 apg) and Cristen Carter is the Hoyas' top rebounder (6.1 rpg). The Hoyas have earned victories in six of their last seven games, with their only loss in the span coming to Villanova (76-69).
HOME-SWEET-HOME... The Friars have posted a 6-2 record in the friendly confines of Alumni Hall / Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. When playing away from home, the Friars have posted a 1-3 record [0-2 in true road games; 1-1 at a neutral site].
FRIARS ARE 0-3 WHEN OUTREBOUNDED BY OPPONENT... The Friars are 0-3 this season when they record fewer rebounds than their opponent, including a 0-2 mark in BIG EAST play. Providence has been outrebounded by Xavier (38-34), St. John's (31-29) and Rhode Island (39-36). Providence's 29 boards vs. St. John's on Dec. 7 marks a season-low.
FRIARS ENTER GAME 0-2 IN BIG EAST PLAY... The Friars dropped two BIG EAST road games to Xavier (Dec. 4) and St. John's (Dec. 7) to start the conference slate (see recaps below regarding games vs. Xavier and St. John's). Georgetown enters Sunday's BIG EAST match-up with an 0-1 record in conference play. The Hoyas fell to Villanova, 76-69, on Dec. 4 in Washington, D.C.
FRIARS LET ONE SLIP AWAY AT ST. JOHN'S... The Friars led by as many as 16 points at the 6:27 mark of the third quarter at St. John's on Sunday, Dec. 7, but let the game slip away in the fourth. The Red Storm outscored Providence 23-9 in the final 10 minutes of play, including an 11-1 advantage in the final 3:23. Teneisia Brown recorded her second double-double of the season (11 pts / 10 rebs) and Orlagh Gormley and Ashley Dinges each tallied 12 points. St. John's shot 48.9-percent from the field in the game (23-47) and Brooke Moore paced three St. John's players in double figures with a game-high 16 points.Â
OFF THE MARK AT XAVIER... The Friars shot a season-low 31.7-percent from the field (20-63), including 3-20 from three-point territory (.150) in a 61-47 loss to Xavier on Dec. 4. Providence shot below 30-percent in each of the first two quarters to find itself trailing 30-19 at halftime. The Friars rallied in the third to outscore the Musketeers, 20-17, and climbed within six points on two occasions early in the fourth quarter, but were held scoreless over the final 5:20 of the game. Sabou Gueye recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds and Teneisia Brown added 12 points and nine rebounds to lead the Friars. Gueye and Brown combined to shoot 50-percent from the field (12-24), while the rest of the team converted just 8-39 shots from the floor (.205). Xavier became the first opponent this season to shoot over 40-percent from the field vs. Providence (.442, 23-52).Â
ASHLEY DINGES EMERGING AS SEASON PROGRESSES... Freshman Ashley Dinges has earned a spot in the starting line-up during each of the Friars last three games. Her first career start came on Sunday, Dec. 7 against St. John's. The rookie scored 12 points on 5-9 shooting, including a 2-3 performance beyond the arc. She added three boards, one assist and one steal. On Dec. 10, Dinges played a season-high 32 minutes. She netted double digits for the 10 points and added five rebounds. In the Friars' most recent game against Stonehill (Dec. 13), Dinges started for the third-straight game and matched her season high in minutes (32). She recorded a career-high 13 points and nine rebounds and added two assists and one steal. In her three starts, she has averaged a team-best 11.7 points and 5.7 rebounds.
TENEISIA BROWN OWNS THE GLASS... Teneisia Brown leads the team and ranks second in the BIG EAST in total rebounds 92) and fifth in rebounds per game (7.7rpg). She has hauled in a season-best 14 rebounds in two games vs. Central Connecticut (Nov. 10) and Bryant (Nov. 30). Her career high in BIG EAST Conference play for rebounding is 10 (vs. St. John's, 12/7/25).
DOUBLE DIGITS... Sabou Gueye and Teneisia Brown have recorded double digits in the scoring column a team-best seven times this season. Gueye leads the team and ranks ninth in the BIG EAST in scoring average at 13.2 points per game. Seven other players on the roster have reached double figures, including Payton Dunbar (five), Orlagh Gormley (three), Ashley Dinges (three), Sophi Hall (one), Riley Hamburger (one) and Audrey Shields (one).Â
FLOOR GENERAL... Sophomore Orlagh Gormley has returned to the court as the Friars' floor general after sitting out the final 22 games of her freshman campaign with an injury. She's making an impact on both ends of the floor, leading the team in assists (4.3 apg) and steals (2.0 spg), while also contributing 7.0 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Gormley has recorded 3+ assists in 10 of 12 games, including five games with five-or-more assists. Additionally, Gormley ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in assists per game and fifth in assist/turnover ratio (2.0) and ninth in steals.
BEYOND THE ARC... Payton Dunbar is starting to heat up from three-point territory after a slow start to the season. She's currently shooting 33-percent from deep (23-70) and ranks ninth in the BIG EAST in three-point field goals made per game (1.9). Dunbar's ability to hit the three and score the basketball has had an impact on the win column. When she hits double figures in the scoring column, the Friars have posted a 4-1 record.
DEFENSE... The Friars rank second in the BIG EAST and rank 21st in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 54.1 points per game. Additionally, Providence ranks second in field-goal percentage defense (37th of 359 in NCAA), having held its opponents to 35.2-percent from the floor. Providence has held 10 of its 12 opponents below 40-percent shooting from the field. Additionally, the Friars have held four opponents below 30-percent from the floor, including each of its last two (URI and Stonehill).
DOUBLE-DOUBLE TROUBLE... Sabou Gueye and Teneisia Brown are tied for the team lead in double-doubles this season, with two each. Gueye tallied 16 points and 12 rebounds vs. Boston College (Nov. 15) and 16 points and 12 rebounds vs. Xavier (Dec. 4). Brown recorded 12 points and 14 rebounds against Central Connecticut (Nov. 10) and 11 points and 10 boards vs. St. John's (Dec. 7).Â
FRIARS SHOOT SEASON-BEST 50-PERCENT FROM THE FLOOR... The Friars enjoyed their best shooting performance of the season in their win over Yale on Nov. 21. Providence shot 50-percent from the field (27-54), including 66.7-percent from the three-point arc (6-9). Providence has shot 45-percent or better from the field in two of its 12 games this season.
BACK-TO-BACK 20+ POINT GAMES FOR SABOU GUEYE... Grad transfer Sabou Gueye scored 20+ points in back-to-back games vs. Northeastern (21) and Yale (22). Her 22 points vs. the Bulldogs matched her career high, which she reached on Dec. 29, 2024 vs. Thomas (Ga.), while playing for Florida A&M. Gueye leads the Friars in 20-point games.
SOPHI HALL PERFECT EN ROUTE TO A CAREER-BEST 18 POINTS... Junior Sophi Hall played 13 minutes off the bench in the Friars' match-up against Yale (Nov. 21) and recorded a career-high 18 points. Sixteen of her 18 points came in the second half. She was perfect from the field (5-5), including a 3-3 showing from beyond the arc. She also was 5-5 from the foul line.
SABOU GUEYE GETS THE FRIARS OVER FINISH LINE VS. NORTHEASTERN... Sabou Gueye scored 21 points, including 11 of the Friars' 15 in the fourth quarter, to defeat Northeastern (50-45) on Nov. 18. Gueye shot 10-16 from the field and added six rebounds, three steals and one blocked shot.
PAYTON DUNBAR'S CAREER-HIGH 22 POINTS LIFT FRIARS OVER BOSTON COLLEGE... Sophomore Payton Dunbar recorded a career-high 22 points against Boston College on Nov. 15. Dunbar shot 8-14 from the field, including a 5-10 performance beyond the arc. Entering the game, Dunbar was 0-9 from three-point territory.Â
PROVIDENCE HANDS BRYANT UNIVERSITY FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON... Providence College hosted intra-state foe Bryant on Nov. 30 and claimed a 62-53 victory. The Bulldogs were off to their best start in program history and entered the game with a 7-0 record. Sabou Gueye netted a game-high 18 points, while Teneisia Brown hauled in a game-high 14 rebounds. Payton Dunbar scored 15 points for the Friars on the strength of a 4-6 shooting performance from beyond the arc.
FRIARS GO 1-1 AT EMERALD COAST CLASSIC... Providence posted a 1-1 record at the Emerald Coast Classic on Nov. 24-25 in Niceville, Fla. The Friars opened tournament play with a 54-48 loss to Middle Tennessee State before taking down Alcorn State, 64-33, in the third-place game. Payton Dunbar averaged 13.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.0 steal per game. Teneisia Brown also averaged 13.5 points and contributed 5.0 boards and 3.0 steals per contest. Orlagh Gormley averaged a team-best 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game and added 8.5 points and 2.0 steals per game.
PAYTON DUNBAR NAMED TO EMERALD COAST CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM... Sophomore transfer Payton Dunbar was named to the Emerald Coast Classic All-Tournament team on Nov. 25. She averaged 13.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.0 steal per game. She shot 42-percent from the field (10-24), including 35-percent from three-point territory. Dunbar paced the Friars with a game-high 19 points in a 64-33 victory over Alcorn State.
BIG DAY ON THE BOARDS VS. CCSU... The Friars recorded 55 rebounds against Central Connecticut on Nov. 10. It marked the most rebounds in a game for Providence since Nov. 9, 2013. On that day, the team hauled in a program-record 65 boards against UMass Lowell. Against CCSU, Teneisia Brown recorded a game-high 14 rebounds. A trio of Friars, including Sabou Gueye, Orlagh Gormley and Ashley Dinges each recorded eight rebounds.Â
TENEISIA BROWN ECLIPSES 1,300 CAREER POINTS... Grad transfer Teneisia Brown has eclipsed 1,300 points for her career. Brown arrived at Providence for her final season after stops at Merrimack (2020-22) and Fairleigh Dickinson (2023-25). She averaged double figures in the scoring column during each of her last three seasons of college basketball and currently ranks third on the team in scoring for the Friars through 12 games (10.4 ppg). Brown has a career scoring total of 1,311 points heading into Sunday's game vs. Georgetown.
NEW LOOK FRIARS TAKE THE COURT IN 2025-26... The Friars have reloaded their roster for the 2025-26 season after losing 10 players to graduation (seven seniors and three graduate students). Junior Sophi Hall and sophomores Orlagh Gormley and Audrey Shields are the only returning players on the roster that previously saw game action in a Friar uniform. The remainder of this year's roster is made up of six transfer student-athletes, four true freshmen and one red-shirt freshman.
BROADCAST AND TV ASSIGNMENTS... As part of the BIG EAST's television and broadcast deal, the Friars will be featured on a host of network platforms encompassing television and streaming during the 2025-26 season, including FS1, TNT, truTV, Peacock and ESPN+. Additionally, Providence's games at the Emerald Coast Classic were available on FloSports and its non-conference match-up at South Carolina will be broadcast on the SEC Network. Each of the Friars' home non-conference games will be broadcast live on ESPN+, in addition to 15 of the program's 20 BIG EAST Conference regular-season games. BIG EAST PRESEASON POLL... The Friars were picked to finish 10th in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, released at the league's annual media day on Oct. 21 at Madison Square Garden. Last season, Providence completed the year with a 13-19 overall record and claimed a seventh-place finish in the regular-season standings with a 6-12 conference record.Â
ERIN BATTH ERA... Erin Batth enters her third season with the Friars in 2025-26. She was hired as the 11th women's basketball coach in program history at Providence College on March 20, 2023. Batth arrived in Friartown with 17 years of NCAA Division I coaching experience, with her most recent stops coming at NC State (2018-22) and Michigan (2022-23). She has been part of five conference championships, eight NCAA Elite Eight appearances and three trips to the NCAA Sweet 16. She also served as an assistant coach at Liberty (2017-18), Georgia State (2014-17), Tennessee Tech (2012-14) and Towson (2010-12). Batth earned her first career win as a head coach on Nov. 7 vs. Hampton (76-46). She helped the Friars earn a bid to the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) in her first year at Providence in 2023-24.
WHAT'S NEXT... The Friars will return to action for their final non-conference game of the season on Sunday, Dec. 28 against No. 3/3 South Carolina. The game will be played at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C. and will tipoff at 12:00 p.m. on the SEC Network.Â
