PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College softball team defeated the Creighton Bluejays, 5-4, in the Friars' BIG EAST opener on Monday, March 7, in Providence, R.I. The Friars moved to a 3-12 overall recording including a 1-0 mark in BIG EAST play. Junior Gabriella Lee (Belmont, Calif.) led the lineup with two RBI singles on a 2-4 effort from the plate. Pitchers Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) and Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) combined for 11 strikeouts while conceding one earned run each. Â
GAME NOTES Â
The Friars opened the game's scoring with three runs in the second. Emma Eichten (Alamo, Calif.) reached on a fielder's choice that brought in Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.) while Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash.) was able to score on a Bluejay throwing error. Bella Sebastian (Ramsey, N.J.) added an RBI single to close the inning (3-0).Â
Creighton got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth (3-1).Â
An RBI single by Lee brought the score to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Â
CU scored a run in the fifth to trim the lead to 4-2 in favor of the Friars.Â
The Bluejays registered a homerun in the sixth to bring score within one (4-3).Â
Lee drilled her second RBI single of the afternoon to extend the Friars' lead to 5-3 in the sixth. Â
Creighton added a run in the seventh, but PC was able to finish on top, 5-4.Â
Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) earned the win for Providence. The graduate student registered eight strikeouts across five innings, while conceding four hits and one earned run. Â

The Friars will continue series play against the Bluejays tomorrow, March 8. Game two will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Glay Field in Providence, R.I. The matchup will be available for stream on FloSports.Â
