Friars Softball Defeats Bryant, 5-4

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team defeated Bryant (11-22, 3-6 America East) on Wednesday, April 9, at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. With the win, the Friars improved to 15-22 overall (8-7 BIG EAST). Senior Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.) paced the Friars with a solo home run, two hits and two RBI.

GAME NOTES

· Julia Renny (Syosset, N.Y.) opened the night's scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the first. It marked her first of the season, sixth in her career (1-0).

· Douma extended the Friars' lead in the third with an RBI double (2-0). Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) plated the run for PC.

· The Bulldogs cut the lead to one off a sac bunt in the top of the fourth (2-1).

· Bryant took the lead following two RBI doubles in the fifth and six innings (3-2).

· The Friars quickly responded with three runs in the sixth highlighted by a solo home run from Douma. PC regained a 5-3 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

· The Bulldogs scored an unearned run in the seventh inning, cutting the deficit to 5-4 in favor of the Friars. The Friars held on from there to secure the 5-4 win.

· Emily Jonte (Alamo, Texas) and Riley Quirk (Taunton, Mass.). Each spent time in the circle for the Friars. The two pitchers combined for six strikeouts while conceding a combined three earned runs.

The Providence College softball team will host the UConn Huskies in a three-game conference series beginning on Friday, April 11 on Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
