PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Fairfield University (3-2), 8-7, on Saturday, Feb. 28 in Providence, R.I. Providence moved to 2-3 on the season. Sophomore
Jay Wilkerson (Baltimore, Md.) recorded a hat-trick for the Friars while junior Matt Lazzarro (Franklin, Mass.) tallied a team high four points on one goal and a career-best three assists.
Cam Sterritt (Brampton, Ont.) recorded 12 saves on a .600 save percentage for the Friars.
1st Quarter:
• Fairfield opened the game by scoring an early goal that gave the Stags a 1-0 lead (12:47).
• Wilkerson (Baltimore, Md.) responded for the Friars with his first goal of the game and tied the score at 1-1 (11:56).

Chris Esposito (Gloucester, Mass.) won all three face-off opportunities in the first quarter
2nd Quarter:
• Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored his first goal of the game early in the second quarter and gave the Friars a 2-1 lead (13:27).
• Fairfield responded with an equalizing goal on the next possession. The Staggs scored another goal shortly after and took a 3-2 lead (10:57).
• Wilkerson scored back-to-back goals to mark a first-half hat-trick as the Friars took a 4-3 lead (8:54).
• Joseph scored his second goal of the game and extended the Friars' scoring run to 3-0 as Providence held a 5-3 lead (5:30).
• Fairfield scored with 1:02 left in the first half and cut the Friars' lead to 5-4 at the break.
• Providence went 7-11 from the face-off 'X' in the first half.
• Fairfield held an advantage in caused turnovers by a margin of 6-2 in the first half.

Cam Sterritt (Brampton, Ont.) tallied seven first-half saves for a .636 save percentage.
3rd Quarter:
• The Stags opened the second half by killing a Providence man-up opportunity and scored on the ensuing possession to tie the game at five (9:07).

Chris Matia (Alexandria, Va.) responded with a quick goal on an assist from
Matt Lazzaro (Franklin, Mass.). It marked Lazzaro's third assist of the game as the Friars took a 6-5 lead (8:12).
• The Stags continued to respond as they scored again and tied the game at six (6:53).
4th Quarter
• Fairfield scored early in the final quarter and took a one-goal lead (13:34).
• Lazzaro scored an equalizing goal with 5:17 remaining in the game that tied the score at seven.
• The Stags broke the tie as Will Consoli scored the game-winning goal with 1:38 remaining in the regulation.
• The Friars failed to convert on multiple opportunities with under 30 seconds to play as Fairfield held onto an 8-7 lead as time expired.
Notes:
• Lazzaro registered a team-high four points on one goal and three assists. Lazzaro's three assists mark a career-high.
• Wilkerson scored a game-high three goals. It marks his second hat-trick of the season.
• Sterritt recorded 12 saves on a .600 save percentage.
• Joseph scored two goals and added one assist. He is currently 17th on the Friars' all-time scoring list and seventh on the all-time career goals list with 134 career points on 99 goals and 35 assists.

Ian Olenik (Windham, N.H.) tallied a game-high three caused turnovers and added three ground balls.
• Esposito finished the game with a 7-13 mark from the face-off 'X' and picked up four ground balls.
• Fairfield recorded 11 caused turnovers to the Friars' six.
• The Stags outscored Providence 4-2 in the final two quarters.
