Lily Procaccianti And Johanna Mahner Claim BIG EAST Weekly Awards

Procaccianti named Offensive Player of the Week; Mahner was tagged Defensive Player of the Week.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College field hockey players Lily Procaccianti (Cranston, R.I.) and Johanna Mahner (Nuremberg, Germany) claimed two of the three weekly awards handed out by the BIG EAST Conference on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Procaccianti was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and Mahner was awarded BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week.
Procaccianti earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in her career. She paced the Friars' offense last week with four goals in a two-game span. On Sept. 4, she recorded her first career hat trick in a record-setting 11-0 victory over New Haven. Procaccianti took three shots in the game and scored on each one. It marked the third multi-goal game of her career. She closed the week with what proved to be the game-winning goal in a 3-0 victory over Bryant on Sept. 6. Procaccianti's goal came with 4:20 left in the third quarter to break the stalemate and give the Friars a 1-0 lead.
Mahner played a key role in the Friars' defensive unit to record back-to-back shut-out victories. On Sept. 4, she anchored a defense that held New Haven without a shot attempt in Providence's 11-0 victory and registered her first assist of the season. On Sept. 6, Mahner helped to backstop another shut-out win versus Bryant University. After allowing four shot attempts in the opening 15 minutes of play, she played a pivotal role in the Friars' defense, which allowed just two shot attempts in the remaining three quarters. The junior defender also scored her first goal of the season [and second of her career] to give the Friars a 2-0 lead in the fourth quarter.
The Friars will return to action on Friday, Sept. 11 against Sacred Heart at 11:00 a.m. The match will be played at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. Providence has compiled a 3-1 record this season, including victories in each of its last three games.
