1998 Season in review
With only four seniors on the 1998 Villanova Lacrosse squad the Wildcats looked to gain some much needed experience, while trying to steal some wins. With five nationally ranked opponents on the schedule the 'Cats had their work cut out for them.
The Wildcats were led offensively by senior Jeff Huber. Huber was coming off a 1997 campaign that some people would only dream of, scoring 32 goals and 18 assists for 50 points. In 1998, Huber became the center point for the Wildcats offense. He tallied 13 goals and 26 assists for 39 points. Huber set the school record for assists in a game with nine against the University of Denver on April 9. Huber scored at least one point in 11 of the 'Cats 14 games this season.
Along side Huber at attack was a freshman from Wilton, Conn., Andy Bogle. Bogle, who was looked upon to produce right from the start, and did not let his teammates down as he scored in eight out of 14 contests for the Wildcats. Bogle had his best effort in a close game against Lehigh, where the talented freshman tallied two goals and two assists as 'Cats defeated Engineers 11-10.
The Wildcats' midfield was also a mix of young players. The 'Cats started two sophomores and a junior, Eric Dauer, Justin Loonie and Andy D'Amico. Dauer led the midfield with 20 goals and 4 assists for 24 points. D'Amico chipped in with 15 goals and three assists for 18 points, while Justin Loonie tallied seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points. The Wildcat midfield combined for 42 goals and 22 assists for 64 points
With only one starter returning on defense from the 1997 squad, the Wildcats counted on a great deal of youth. Junior Evan Clancy started all 14 games for the 'Cats showing a strong defensive presence. The Wildcats looked to freshman Brian O'Hagan to step in and anchor an inexperienced defense. O'Hagan also started all 14 games for the 'Cats garnering rookie-of-the-year honors.
Coach Marks had three outstanding goalies competing for the starting spot this season. Junior Brendan Keneally used his experience to help him win the starting spot early on in the season. Keneally finished the season with a 11.80 goals against average. Midway through the 1998 season, Keneally was pushed by two outstanding freshman, Mike Mullette and Matt Wilk. By the end of the season Mullette and Wilk each started three games for the 'Cats. Mullette finished the season with a 3-0 record, while compiling 11.39 goals against average, while Wilk finished with a 1-2 record and tallied a 14.50 goals against average.
At the faceoff position, senior Brian Rhodes once again showed that he was one of the best in the nation as he dominated the Wildcats' opponents in 1998. Rhodes tallied 155 winning faceoffs for an impressive 64%. For his career on the Main line Rhodes has notched 638 faceoffs, winning 415 for 65%.
Coming into the 1998 season, it seemed that the Wildcats' lone weakness may have been that of inexperience, a weakness that can only change and improve with time. With the 'Cats losing only four seniors to graduation, the best is yet to come for the 1999 Villanova Wildcats men's lacrosse team.
