PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Senior Ken Leahy scored with 2:05 remaining in overtime to give Providence College a 10-9 win over Quinnipiac in men's MAAC lacrosse action on Sunday, March 19 at Providence, R.I. For the Friars it marked their second consecutive overtime victory.
Quinnipiac took a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes of play on goals by Ryany Petrowsky, Dan Kerrigan and John Giordano. Despite outscoring the Braves, 4-3, in the second quarter, the Friars trailed at halftime by the score of 6-5. Leahy led the Friars in the first half with two goals.
After each team scored two goals in the third quarter, Jeff Merklinger got the Friar offense going in the fourth quarter with his third tally of the game. Chris Houston also netted a goal for PC as they outscored Quinnipiac, 2-1, in the fourth quarter and forced the game into overtime tied at 9-9.
It appeared the Braves had won the game in overtime but Mike Baglio's goal was disallowed because he was in the crease when he shot the ball. The Friars gained possession and Leahy scored the unassisted game winner to give PC its fourth win of the season.
With the victory, Providence improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in MAAC action, while Quinnipiac fell to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in league play.
