Providence, R.I.- The Providence College softball team lost the first game of today's doubleheader with Boston College, 10-0 in five innings. Game two was called in the fourth inning, with the Friars leading, 4-0, and will resume play on Thursday, April 20 at 11:00 a.m.
In game one, Boston College scored five runs in the first inning, with Lauren Fischetti putting the Eagles on the board first with a RBI single to centerfield. Summer Jarratt followed up with a grand slam home run to right centerfield. In the third inning, BC started out with back-to-back home runs from Chris Vicari and Fischetti. Julie Ulbrich then hit a two RBI home run to deep left field. The Eagles rounded out their offensive effort in the fourth as Jarratt brought in pinch runner Alison Erbig on a fly out to right field.
Boston College's hurler Kim Ryan improved to 11-7 on the mound with the victory, fanning nine batters. Providence's Missy Peterson (Santa Ana, Calif.) took the loss, giving up four hits and five runs in one inning to drop to 11-9. Heather Nathan (South Hempstead, N.Y.) closed out the final four innings, allowing seven hits and five runs.
Peterson came back, however, in game two and had only given up three hits in three innings before the game was called. Ryan pitched 2.3 innings for the Eagles, giving four hits and four runs to the Friars. Brooke Shull will be on the mound for Boston College when the game resumes.
The Friars scored all their runs in the third inning, as Kerri Jacklets (Sayville, N.Y.) knocked a three-run homer to deep left field and Sarah Morin (Westerly, R.I.) hit a RBI double to left field.
After today's game, Providence moves to 18-20 overall and 3-6 in the BIG EAST, while Boston College moves to 17-15 overall and 6-3 in the BIG EAST.
Providence returns to action on Wednesday, April 19, when they host the Big Green of Dartmouth College. Game time for the doubleheader is slated for 3:00 p.m.
