PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team was defeated, 4-2, by Villanova in BIG EAST Conference field hockey action on Sunday, October 27 in Providence, R.I. The loss marked the first of the year for the Friars while playing at home on Hendricken Field. PC falls to 8-11 overall and 1-3 in the BIG EAST.
The Wildcats took an early two-goal lead in the first half. Christina Lugones connected on Villanova's first goal 1:41 into the game. Lugones' goal was assisted by Kristen Strocen. Villanova took a 2-0 lead at the 25:10 mark as Leah Lisausky scored unassisted. Providence rallied 28:31 into the game and made the score 2-1 as senior Jennifer Chin (Norwood, Mass.) scored her team-leading eighth goal of the year. Villanova's Sarah Francis closed out the first half with an unassisted goal at the 32:47 mark, and the Wildcat's took a 3-1 lead into halftime.
Lisausky scored Villanova's fourth and final goal of the game with 23:55 remaining in the second half to put the Wildcats ahead 4-1. PC's Kelly Romanowicz (Shrewsbury, Mass.) cut Villanova's lead to 4-2 at the 54:51 mark off an assist from junior Amie Hutton (Nantucket, Mass.), but that would also mark the final Friar goal of the day, as the Wildcats took the 4-2 win.
Junior Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) registered a season-high 11 saves in goal for Providence. Meghan Helwig recorded the win in goal for 'Nova with eight saves.
Providence (8-11, 1-3 BIG EAST) will host Connecticut in the final regular-season game of the year. The game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and will be played at Hendricken Field on the campus of Providence College. Seven PC seniors will be honored prior to the start of the game.
