Softball Sweeps Doubleheader At Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Providence College softball team swept a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader at Syracuse University on Sunday, April 21st, winning 5-3 in game one and 3-2 in game two.

The Friars (13-32-1 overall/4-12 BIG EAST) opened game one with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Syracuse took the lead from Providence two innings later, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth and one in the bottom of the fifth inning. PC scored three times in the top of the seventh inning off of Orangewomen reliever Taylor Petersen to win, 5-3. PC junior pitcher Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and two earned runs while striking out two batters.

PC sophomore Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) had two hits in game one and drove in two runners. Freshman catcher Ashlee Weatherford (Woodland, Calif.) was three-for-four at the plate and also drove in a pair of runners. Freshman shortstop Jaclyn Treveloni (Ashland, Mass.) added two hits and an RBI.

In game two, Syracuse (19-15 overall/7-3 BIG EAST) again took a lead, scoring first with one run in the bottom of the first inning and increasing the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Providence tied the contest by scoring twice in the top of the sixth inning and then PC took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh to win. Peterson pitched the complete game again for the Friars, limiting the Orangewomen to six hits and one earned run. Providence freshman secondbaseman Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) had two hits and a run scored for the Friars.

The Friars return to action on Thursday, April 25th when they travel to Dartmouth College for a non-league doubleheader that begins at 3:00 p.m.
