FAIRFIELD, CONN. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Sacred Heart University, 4-1, on Sunday, September 8, in Fairfield, Conn. Senior Jennifer Chin (Norwood, Mass.) registered one goal and one assist to lead the Friars.
Junior Stefanie Suehnholz (Flemington, N.J.) led off the scoring for the Friars at the 9:54 mark of the first half. Chin put the Friars up, 2-0, with an unassisted goal with 4:37 remaining in the first half. The Friars took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Providence extended its lead to 3-0 on a goal from sophomore Stephanie Wise (South Burlington, Vt.). Wise's goal was assisted by Chin with 17:39 showing on the clock.
Sacred Heart answered for its only goal of the game, to make the score 3-1, as Courtney Alger scored with 15:29 remaining on the clock. The Friars got an insurance goal with 38-seconds left to play in the game, as junior Maura Desfosses (Plymouth, N.H.) knocked in a rebound, to make the score 4-1.
Junior Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) stopped two shots for Providence in the win. For Sacred Heart, Robyn Breer and Jess Becque combined for 16 saves.
Providence (3-2) will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to participate in the BIG EAST/Big 10 Challenge on Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15.
