PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College sophomore men's lacrosse player Mark Rotella (Smithtown, N.Y.) has been selected to attend the seventh annual NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference. The Conference will be held on May 25-29 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and the Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Rotella is one of 273 student-athletes who were selected to attend the Conference out of 1,172 nominees from 302 NCAA institutions.

Rotella is in the midst of his second season with the Providence College men's lacrosse team. In two seasons at PC, Rotella has played in 29 games as the Friars' primary face-off man. He has won 205 of 396 face-off opportunities in his career for a 51.8 face-off percentage. Rotella also has collected 71 groundballs. He is a mathematics major with a 3.95 cumulative grade-point average. Rotella, who attended Smithtown High School, is the son of Frank and Liz Rotella.

The leadership conference is designed to enhance student-athletes' leadership and communication skills to enable them to become more effective leaders and motivators when they return to their campuses. Several of the participants in the leadership conference are members of NCAA campus student-athlete advisory committees (SAAC). A campus SAAC is a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses and it is the "student voice" in the NCAA's governance structure.

Toward the conclusion of the leadership conference, the student-athletes will be asked to create a self-directed project to implement on their campus that addresses a critical issue in the university setting.

The conference is an extension of the NCAA's successful CHAMPS/Life Skills Program - a developmental program structured to prepare student-athletes for graduation and success in life. Each NCAA college and university that has a CHAMPS/Life Skills Program is asked to nominate four student-athletes who have demonstrated an ability or strong desire to be a leader on their campus or who would benefit from a significant leadership experience. In order to be eligible for the conference, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and must have athletics eligibility remaining in the following academic year. Final selections are made by a committee comprised of CHAMPS/Life Skills coordinators from NCAA member institutions and student-athletes charged with identifying an outstanding group of leaders.
